The biggest tax break of all for a TL OTR driver

Taking your per-diem deduction is the best move of all for anybody who does OTR, TL driving. Save your logbooks, though. You'll need 'em in a year or two if the IRS comes calling to audit you.

What is the per-diem allowance per day now? Like 55? If so, that's a $15,000+ deduction, making it around 3x the standard deduction.

Yeah I drive a Swift truck
And that means one thing
It means she's slow
It's a typical company truck
It's just all show and no go

I'm gettin' passed by Yella
And even Overnite
I'm gettin' passed by ever' body in sight
46 days on the road
And I'm not gettin' home tonight

No, my hometown's nowhere in sight
And if you think I'm pissed off
You're right
46 days on the road
And I'm not gettin' home tonight

Love pissing off those trucking company insiders.

The Per Diem Rate is 52.00 a day. IRS allows truckers subject to DOT to get 75% of this deduction. It can be taken as itemized deduction subject to 2% or on Schedule C by owner/operator.

Where can I find information on what a driver can and cannot claim as a tax writeoff?

Items Truckers Can Deduct. That should help some. It is not really in-depth, but a good start.
