Tax question

Hi everyone,

I'm not sure if this question is even asked in the right section (I'm really sorry about it if it's not) but my reason for joining and such is because my brother is a trucker, and is attempting to do his taxes for the first time. He gets paid Per diem weekly with his regular check, and it showed up in box 14 of his W-2's. He's wondering if he's capable of filling out a 1040 EZ form or if this type of income (if it's considered income) elminates him from choosing this option and forces him to file a 1040?

I know this is a really specific question, but any help would be really really appreciated!!!

Thanks!

I don't know the answer to your question, but you have the net and HR block is only $10 online and e-files very quickly. Well worth the money.

Anyway, the point is if anything like that comes up it will immediately tell you you're not eligible for whatever form you're using and switch you, so you'd know pretty quick.

Also, you can try this and quit out of it without being charged anything.

Actually now that I think about it, I think it can be free. I had the option to pay the $10 to import last year's info.

I think it's only free up to a certain income though.

Last, my wife waitresses and I think her tips were box 14. It used the 1040a in my case.

Taxact is totally free with no income restriction on the federal level.

In response to the original question, he should be fine for the EZ form. The box is not taxable, but informational. If he itemized, he would have to reduce the calculated per diem days by the amount on the w-2.
