Yes, It has a much smaller coverage area.

All Cyfre amplifiers are designed to supply enough power to the mobile device(s)
in order to make and receive calls. Therefore your mobile device(s) may only read one
or two bars depending on location and coverage strength needed for your device to
operate properly. This is to ensure that there are no adverse effects caused to the
network by the wireless booster and network quality is preserved.

The above explanation is on the install sheet . This is why Cyfre amplifiers are carrier approved and no other amplifiers are. Believe me I wish it was just a little stronger . But Like I said it was made to Alltel network engineers specs. And when you buy as many amplifiers as Alltel does you can have a say in the power output

It really doesn't make sense to me, since Cyfre's website even says 28dB gain, but perhaps the gain is on the originating signal, able to improve its quality/strength by 28dB? Then it only emits a small amount of power on the internal antenna?

What happens if you replace that 3dB interior antenna with something like a 15dB antenna? I'm assuming the higher gain antenna would pick up more of the outside signal and produce something similar to feedback with a microphone, possibly destroying the amplifier? I did buy that package from a seller from eBay (said she bought it for her boyfriend, was the wrong thing), and I'm assuming it came from you to get to her, but I was actually looking to test it out at the farm. I'm sure you remember the thread on BBR. I just figured a $200 mistake was easier to justify than the $400 one. Mostly, I just wanted to see how the Cyfre performed, before I jump into the $400 purchase for the IVWA. I may end up giving this one I got on eBay to my mom or my uncle. Mom gets very poor coverage in our cottage (she could deal with going out to the car for a phone call), and my uncle gets really bad coverage at home (he already has to stand 2-3 feet from the window, so no big deal there, either).

Because of the low power you will see little gain and also then you might have an issues with the antennas ocsillating as you guessed they might. You would make no mistakes with the IVWA819, It has power to spare. I sell lots of them to people with cabins and RV's. We Have a package with larger and more powerful antennas for those applications. I am not crazy about the DBSW819 at all, but Alltel loves it and they go through 3 to 5 thousand a month of them. As a small shareholder in Cyfre I guess I should love it too when Alltel buys that many of them , LOL

Looks like I bought a paperweight, as I can't even see any improvement in my Tahoe at many marginal locations. I'm not guessing it's a Cyfre problem, perhaps the guy I bought it from did something wrong that messed up the amp. Guess I'll just have to try another in a few weeks, when I can afford to.

    I wish, I didn't even realize it wasn't a wireless model until today. CA-819.

I haven't gotten the improvement I was expecting out of mine.

And I can't seem to find an install location that stops the external and internal antennas from interfering.

Even when they don't seem to be interfering I don't get as much improvement as I expected. I have no way of knowing if its the booster or the "can you hear me now" network.
