    Driver salaries to be $60,000 to $90,000 by 2014

    Trucking-labor costs declined during the recession, so some of the projected wage increases will be “catch-up,” according to Perry, who predicted the 30 percent boost in wages by 2014. Labor costs rose 21 percent in the last recovery, he said.For a permanent fix to the industry’s shortages, Perry estimated that long-haul novices earning $40,000 annually and experienced drivers at $70,000 would need to see increases that might top his projection of a 30 percent boost by 2014.“What does it take to make a normal person happy with being away from home two straight weeks?” Perry said. “The rule of thumb is we’ll probably have to pay these guys between $60,000 and $90,000.”

    It'll never happen....Not as long as morons are lined up in front of schools to pay to drive for bottom feeders.

    There a some companies that keep there drivers: UPS, UPS/Freight, Conway, ABF, YRC, USF Holland, And many more local companies. BUT, KEEP A PERFECT DRIVING RECORD, or sit at home. Thats the problem with this industry, New Drivers screw up within the first 3 months , or first 3 years, Then post, NO ONE WILL HIRE ME.

    We need to get rid of the filth out there first!Thats the only excuse most companies need to keep pay down.if the general public views us as animals (which a small percentage are)we as a whole will never be treated as professionals nor be paid like ones!I personally am a "Professional" driver and get paid like one.So to all you newbies out there keep it clean!or in 10 years from now youll be one of those guys crying about his pay with his trashy truck and trashy attitude!Just my 2cents

    They're morons to line up for a job they're told will pay $40,000 the first year? They see articles like this and say, "I can do that! Especially if I can earn $60,000 and more in just a few short years!"

    And let's face it. If drivers were actually paid that much, we wouldn't see the type of turn over this industry presently has.
    And for that kind of pay, companies could be much more selective.

    No, I disagree with you. It isn't the morons. It's the liars.
    The CDL schools that lie to students.
    Recruiters that lie to students.

    Let's face it. If prospective drivers were told the truth, less than half would even take the first step.

    I don't blame the freight companies for paying what they do. They have a constant parade of new drivers out there hoping to cash in on 'one last bastian' of work available these days. Why pay more?

    I posted in another thread that I think the problem is all the 'free' government money. The Schools, the training companies, et al are paid over $7,000 per student to get them 'trained'.
    They can make more money training students than they can moving freight.
    If they can make all that money training, they don't have to watch freight rates. Hence the problem of freight rates, in part, is a result of the government under writing this rediculous program.
    Get rid of the 'free' money, and all of us will do better.

    But morons? I think not.

    Wouldn't rates have to increase to offset the pay increase. The problem is the feds are keeping interest rates low to slow inflation and get more people to borrow. But that plan is what is keeping americans in debt instead becoming debt free. 60,000 a year to haul cheap freight? what are they smoking...

    You're right and do you think they are going to raise pay and use that for an excuse to raise rates ? No way . The rates would have to go up first and the BFI's will keep that from happening . Bad enough it was the van sector . Now they are moving into oilfield .

    ...and when Mexican drivers start running here the driver's salary is going to stay at $60-90,000, freight rates will stay low, dollar bills will fall from trees, the rivers will all flow with champagne, retail prices will decrease by 50%, food will be nearly free, employees will only have to work 3 days a week, and unicorns will flourish in neighborhoods everywhere. Yeah, makes a lot of sense to me... (Please note the tone of skepticism)

    True. But people still chase the American dream, even if they don't have the skills to achieve it. And worse yet there are the many more that think they have a god given right to be given the American dream by the the rest of us; but that's another thread.

    A majority of the people who show up at CDL mills are the same people that screwed around in school, never got an A, B, or C and were happy when the teacher revised their grade to a D+ instead of a D. Many are the same people that have been fired from half the jobs they have held and did not give a crap about the others. Examples of their work quality and attention to detail can be seen on virtually every BFI carrier's trucks; whether they were assigned to the truck or not. I'm sure many of you have had your hood taken off at a truck stop by one of these yahoos.

    Many seem to believe that if they can operate a four wheeler good enough to get them to the school without hitting anything 4 out of 5 days of the week they have what it takes to operate a tractor trailer safely; you've seen their cars and their driving. And lets not forget those that have their cell phone glued to their ear and set on conference call half their day just so they don't miss a thing that their drop out buddies have to say. The other half the day they are texting to their BFF.

    Everyone wants a job that pays them double what their skills can earn them anywhere else; who wouldn't. If a person has a choice to wash cars for $8.00 hr, flip burgers for $9.00 hr, work loading docks for $9.50 hr, or drive a truck for $40,000 a year (As seen in school advertisements), they are going to choose "Drive a truck." These are the very same people that disappear from the industry in 3-6 months.

    Something to think about, people resort to the habits they have had the longest. A person that did not do their home work in elementary school is the same person that did not do their home work in middle school, or high school, or their first, second, third, etc career choice they made. They have spent their lives following the same pattern of not doing their home work. It is just natural for them to do the same thing when looking at truck driving as a career choice; not do their homework.

    If there is a positive side to their pattern it is that they rarely stick to anything for very long and will leave soon. Unfortunately, there always seems to be another slacker waiting to take their seat.

    OR if the rates go up they will not pass on to the driver...
