State with worst drivers? California miles ahead of Florida, truckers say

State with worst drivers? California miles ahead of Florida, truckers say

And in the category of states with both the worst drivers and the best-smelling bus stops, the winner is: California.

OK, so it's a made-up category, but California was voted the state with the worst drivers last month in a poll of readers of Overdrive magazine, a publication for long-haul truckers.

And California is the state where the "Got Milk?" ad campaign reached out farther with scent strips placed in bus shelters around San Francisco. The strips gave off the aroma of chocolate-chip cookies and, the ad designers hoped, gave smellers the idea of grabbing some cookies and milk.

However, San Francisco officials pulled the scented ads a few weeks ago after concerns about triggering allergies or asthma. In Orlando, Lynx has a campaign to clean up bus stops, but no scent strips.

By the way, the Overdrive poll of more than 400 truckers ranked Florida as second to Texas for having the best roads. But, according to those who ride the big rigs, the Sunshine State also has the fifth-worst drivers.

As noted, California had the worst, followed by New York, Illinois and New Jersey.

Worst drivers

I can only agree to that somewhat. California around the bay area is pretty bad. Southern Cal though has 4 wheelers that understand right lane restrictions for big trucks. I dont think they drive all that bad.
Denver Colorado is my hot spot, that and Salt Lake city. to me those are the places that have the "worst" drivers

Was in FL about 2 mos ago during spring break! Drove the turnpike to Miami---piece of cake. CA drivers are generally more rude and self-focused. The SF Bay area is so PC that they are disgusting!!

EDIT: I agree S. CA drivers are more savvy and skillful than the N. CA drivers!!

Most Florida drivers aren't from Florida. How was that fair?

I run the midwest, and I live in fear of cars with Indiana license plates. In fact, I automatically assume that any car with an Indiana license plate has the equal to an "Idiot Onboard" sign plastered on it. As for Illinois, they drive fast and hard, but they all drive fast and hard and you can at least count on that.

I never had problems with California, but you have to be willing to run the same pace as everyone else to make driving work out there. they have traffic jams, but the bumper to bumper jammed up traffic is still moving at 55 until something goes wrong. Than, It's gridlock time!!!

I have to add two cities here in Canada. That is Toronto, Ontario and Montreal, Quebec. Of the two I would choose Toronto as having the worst, the dumbest and the rudest drivers of all. I have driven in all of US and all of Canada for many years and even though I am a Torontonian I still pick my city as having the worst drivers. They of course believe otherwise
When I'm back from the US, I know I am home by the number of middle finger salutes and angry honks I get from mad, frustrated, road raging ####### on four wheels. It is customary for them to speed up when they see me trying to change a lane, to the point when I litterally have to push my way in ( instead of running out of road). I always let them in and let off the fuel pedal, but never get a thank you wave, especially from women. Instead I get cut off constantly to which I don't even react anymore. On the occasions I do, I get a middle finger. I was surprised to never get that salute in the US. In general you Americans are more easy going and polite or you just don't care. The Canadians seem to have something up their you know what

Worst drivers in my opinion has to be in Connecticut. The state is so overcrowded and people are notorious for getting in the middle lane and doing 45 and refusing to move over.

And when you finally get around the guy you drive 2 miles up the road and find another one. One time I was driving on I84, had my daughter in the truck and these guys had me losing my mind. I finally said the heck with it, I'll one-up these morons. I got in the middle lane and set the cruise at 35 mph. Didn't help anybody else's blood pressure, but is sure lowered mine.

My vote for the state with worst drivers is Missouri. No one in that state knows how to merge onto the freeway. They drive 40mph all the way to the end of a mile and a half long acceleration ramp, pull out in front of you while tapping the brakes waiting on you to "do something."

Please explain? I am a born and raised Hoosier, learned to drive in ALL types of weather, on ANY type of road, watch my SIDE mirrors in ANY vehicle I drive, learned at 14 how to PROPERLY merge onto the interstate, and how to pay attention to not only MY driving, but all others around me, as well...INCLUDING big trucks, who "drift", from 1/4 their lane, to 1/2 another lane!!!

This type of "driver" behavior is in ALL states, NOT just the midwest, or Indiana...
