There have been many attempts to make Interstate 81 safer. The latest effort focuses on truckers and their own safety.
Law enforcement and other groups kicked off the plan to increase the number of truckers on I-81 who use seat belts. In 2005, Drive Smart Virginia conducted a similar initiative on Interstate 95, which resulted in a 20 percent increase of truckers who buckled up.
Truckers on 81 will get reminders to wear their seat belts through CB message alerts, billboards and activities at truck stops, weigh stations and rest areas.
