FMCSA limits lighting on trucks, trailers

FMCSA limits lighting on trucks, trailers
6/13/07
Quote:
Truckers who have auxiliary lights on either side of the three-lamp cluster on their trucks or trailers face violations, thanks to a revision of the lighting regs issued by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration officials.
A final rule published by FMCSA officials on June 11 in the Federal Register restricts the placement of auxiliary lights on trucks and trailers. Truckers must now meticulously place any lights in addition to the required three-lamp identification cluster and the clearance lamps.
The new reg requires that additional lights on either side of the cluster be at least two times the distance that separates two adjacent lamps in the cluster.
The revised regulation stems from a conflict between an earlier version of the FMCSA regulation and guidance issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on a Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard.

Bravo! I like chicken lights, but even the manufacturers lost respect for the tradition of that cluster of three markers on the center line of a vehicle, front and back. Of course, ID lights are useless. Chicken lights do as much to identify a large vehicle as the 3-light cluster. Sober motorists should not have so much trouble distinguishing a truck from a Christmas Tree or a billboard. At today's speeds, by the time you see the ID lights you have passed the truck. Still, have some respect for tradition. Do not put ID lights on a pickup truck.
