Driver turnover rates increase once again, says ATA

Driver turnover rates increase once again, says ATA

ALEXANDRIA, Va.—Although the trucking industry has seen its share of fluctuation for freight volumes in the past year, one data point which has remained consistent is the ongoing state of annual driver turnover i.e. the truckload driver shortage.
According to data released by the American Trucking Associations (ATA) yesterday, annualized turnover rates for truckload line-haul drivers were at 127 percent for the first quarter of 2007—the last quarter for which this data is available. This is this highest the turnover rate has been for this group since it peaked at 136 percent during the fourth quarter of 2005. And the ATA also reported that the small carrier rate for the same period was 102 percent, which is down from 112 percent in the fourth quarter. On the less-than-truckload (LTL) side, the ATA said that the line-haul driver turnover rate increased from 10 percent to 14 percent, although turnover is typically lower for this facet of the industry.
Although these numbers seem staggering, they are in line with what has been considered “average” over the past few years. With the trucking industry currently experiencing some softness in the form of excess capacity, the impact of this ongoing shortage is not as severe as it could be. But that has not stopped carriers from taking steps to bump up the driver numbers and reduce number in an effort to expand capacity.

Name me another large industry in the U.S. that has this high of turnover rates?!! Think "Deadliest Catch" is better than this!

This may be a dumb question, but what is the definition of "turnover rate"? The number of drivers changing jobs within the industry, or leaving or entering the industry? A combination of all three?

Job turnover rate would be company hopping.

This will never change. If it does, I will be very surprised. Hopefully, with the increasing popularity of online information such as forums like these, more people will investigate more before they jump into something that is completely different than what they expected.

Trucking is a good career, and an honest living. It is also quite a bit of work at times, and a type of job that is much different than what most people can imagine.

"According to a well-known May 2005 report economic consultancy Global Insight prepared for the ATA, there is a projected need for another 320,000 long-hail drivers between 2004-2014. Although this report is now more than a year old, ATA Chief Economist Bob Costello, says he is hearing that carriers are facing the same types of challenges find drivers as they were when the report was first released."

Gee, I wonder why they're facing the same types of challenges? Could it be because they're still using the same type of pay structure?
