Hiking truck speed limit

Our View: Governor should sign bill hiking truck speed limit
6/23/07
Quote:
In spite of some reservations, we believe Gov. Rod Blagojevich should sign the bill to boost the truck speed limit from 55 per hour to 65.

Establishing a uniform speed limit would enable large trucks to “go with the flow” of traffic, hopefully, reducing the need for cars to weave around slower moving trucks. It would also curb, hopefully, tailgating.

We say “hopefully,” because this is all assuming everybody will drive 65. But, the fact is that many drivers, both truckers and motorists, regularly exceed the posted speed limit.

Opponents of the bill argue it would result in truck drivers exceeding the 65 mph limit, as many of them currently violated the 55 limit; and it would increase the likelihood and severity of accidents.

Which is a legitimate concern, given truckers driving for many hours sometimes doze off, which is dangerous enough, but at a higher speed limit could even more drastically reduce their prospects of regaining control of their rigs before it is too late.

Even alert, traveling at higher speeds will reduce the time a trucker has to react if he has to brake to avoid an accident.

As for motorists — and truckers –— who tailgate, it’s unlikely that irresponsible action will diminish much. Faster traffic will mean faster tailgaters.

I drive IL more than I like, but the double nickels for heavier vehicles isn't enforced on the Interstate, it hasn't been for awhile. It may rate a speeding violation on your logbook, though, so I have been told.

Another driver I know got a verbal warning for speed, he was one of the slower ones of a cluster of trucks, and was the only one that stopped for the disco lights, that was the reason for the verbal.

The opponents in IL and OH have their heads stuck firmly where the sun does shine. There are far more states with a 65 limit than there are that don't. And they are not having the doomsday problems that IL thinks they'll have.

As for continueing to break the speed limit and tail gating laws I'm sure that will happen. Cops needs to do better enforcement.

Illinois is stepping up enforcement for dangerous drivers, they have motorcycle patrolman now, and they are using odd vehicles that don't stand out for unmarked, last week I saw a 4 door compact pickup with someone pulled over, it was that Sunflower Yellow color that really stands out. They have been using Mustangs for a year or more, too. They are targeting weavers. fast speeders, and and tail-gating motorists driving all vehicles.

I hate those darn motorcycles, it's another pattern to learn, you can see a 4 wheeler with lights for a mile in the daytime, it gives you plenty of time to move left , the motorcycles don't show up till maybe 4-500 feet. The lights are much smaller and lower to the ground.

Smokey In A Plain Wrapper

I've seen law enforcement in unmarked vehicles, not only in Illinois, but in Maine, Connecticut, and other states. It's nice to see them nab by surprise some irresponsible, speeding SUV driver weaving in and out of traffic. This SUV driver cut me off and dangerously cut across two lanes of dense traffic. While doing his dangerous maneuver he cutoff what he thought was another motorist...but surprise, he cut off a smokey in a plain wrapper. The lights came on and the SUV driver got pulled over immediately by a very angry trooper (I saw the stern look on the troopers face as he abruptly exited his cruiser). I drive the legal speed limit at 55 mph in Illinois. This takes all the stress out of having to worry about speed traps. Even though I'm tracked by Qualcomm and I log 55 mph in Illinois and Ohio, I drive 55 mph because it's the current law. Would be nice to drive 65 mph and get up to speed with the flow of traffic.
