Rocks tossed at vehicles on I-94 cause damage, injury

Rocks tossed at vehicles on I-94 cause damage, injury

6/25/07

Jackson County
Michigan
Quote:
Rocks tossed at vehicles on I-94 over the weekend damaged several tractor-trailers and broke a woman's arm.
Leoni Township police said a Davison woman, Jessica Hempon, 37, was injured at 2:20 a.m. Saturday when a softball-size rock crashed through the windshield of a westbound tractor-trailer at the Hawkins Road overpass.
Chief Tom Bertram said Hempon was treated for a broken arm at Foote Hospital. She was a passenger in a Dedicated Logistics Co. truck.
Bertram said it appeared the rock was tossed from the base of the bridge, and not dropped from overhead.
Five tractor-trailers were struck by rocks at Hawkins Road. Bertram said similar incidents were reported at overpasses in Parma and Clear Lake.
Anyone with information is asked to call Leoni police at 764-7034.
Man in good condition after evading cops
A 39-year-old Jackson man is in good condition today after he crashed his motorcycle while attempting to evade police Saturday night, state troopers reported.
According to a press release, a trooper from the Michigan State Police Jackson Post tried to stop William Michael Latoski about 10:20 p.m. for a traffic violation, but the biker didn't stop.
Police pursued Latoski, and the motorcycle crashed into a swampy area on Meridian Road, near Erika Road in Henrietta Township.
Latoski was flown from the scene to Sparrow Hospital in Lansing.
Sgt. Timothy J. McGaffigan said today the investigating officer will forward a report to prosecutors for charges.
Small plane flips at airport in Hillsdale
A small plane flipped after landing Sunday morning at Hillsdale Municipal Airport.
Pilot Kenneth W. Strong, 68, of Union City climbed out of his American Champion 7EC with minor injuries, according to the crash report filed by the Hillsdale County Sheriff's Department.
Just as the plane was coming to a stop, it was hit by a strong gust of wind and flipped because of the wind and "over-corrected steering," according to the report.

What the hell is wrong with people anymore? Is it just me or does it seem people are simply becoming more and more hateful these days? I got lucky and only had an egg thrown off the overpass and hit my windshield, was late and night though and was so loud it scared the #### out of me and I almost went off the road. I heard of another lady who had a rock come through her windshield and tear her jaw off and they couldn't replace it so she was disfigured all of her life...messed up.

Driver Killed From Overpass Projectile

WiseOne: I believe it was last year or the year before in Indiana a driver was killed when, if I remember correctly, a concrete block was dropped from an overpass. It went through the driver-side windshield crushing the driver's chest. Amazingly the driver was able to pull his rig over to the shoulder and call for help, if memory serves. Unfortunately, he died the next day. Heard the Truckin' Bozo talking about the incident on his show. Apparently the perp was eventually caught a week or two later. This is one messed-up world these days. I'm sure you scan, and other drivers, like me, all overpasses before we pass under. It's another hazard on a very long list things to look out for as we try to safely navigate our rigs through very dense traffic.

UPDATE

Teens charged in I-94 assaults

7/7/07
Quote:
Investigators say a rock tossed at a road sign evolved into a three-night assault on motorists traveling I-94 in Jackson and Calhoun counties.
Six teenagers from Leoni Township and Jackson were charged Friday with 10-year felonies stemming from a barrage of rocks and bricks tossed off overpasses onto tractor-trailers, breaking the arm of one passenger.
"The likelihood of catastrophic injury was just phenomenal," Jackson County Chief Assistant Prosecutor Mark Blumer said. "It's like getting hit by a cannonball."
District Judge R. Darryl Mazur arraigned the teens Friday afternoon and set a preliminary hearing for July 19. He issued personal-recognizance bonds because investigators said the teens have cooperated since they were nabbed.
Each is charged with rock throwing causing serious-impairment injury, assault with a deadly weapon and misdemeanor rock throwing causing property damage. Charges are pending in Calhoun County.

Yes your memory is correct and it was a teenager doing this! It is sad these teenagers are not told "what can happen" if you do this and then again some just don't care thinking they can't get caught

So now a couple of young punks are going to be rewarded for their boredom with a decade or more behind bars and possibly some sexual assault by other prisoners. It's sad that this is probably only the beginning for many kids. What's up with our youth?
