| UPDATE/Police accuse trucker of telling fake story Police accuse trucker of telling fake story 6/27/07 Rutland Herald, VT Quote:
A 35-year-old trucker who told police Friday night he had been robbed at gunpoint by two black men in a pull-off area in Dorset is facing a criminal charge for allegedly making up the story.
Paul S. Hadden of Hoosick Falls, N.Y., was issued a citation Tuesday to appear in Bennington District Court in August to face a charge of providing false information to police.
Police said when Hadden was questioned about the incident Tuesday, he changed his story and said no crime had taken place.
"After a lengthy second interview, Hadden confessed to making up the entire story," Vermont State Police said in statement released Tuesday.
"Hadden concocted the false story after pulling into the Lake Emerald (State Park) pull off," the release stated. "Hadden confessed to Sgt. (Sam) Capogrossi that he lied a great deal of the time and on this occasion acted on impulse."
Police did not release a reason why Hadden allegedly made up the story about the crime.
During the weekend, police released a statement saying that around 9:30 p.m. Friday, Hadden said he was in a pull-off area in Dorset on Route 7. Hadden told police he was on the passenger side of his delivery truck when he saw headlights of a vehicle pulling up behind him, and one man got out, displayed a weapon and demanded his wallet.
He also told police that one of the men struck him with a blunt object and he fell to the ground. Police said he falsely described the two men whom he claimed pulled in behind him as two black males. | rutland article |
