I'm a east coast heavy hauler looking for some info on this scale. I never come out this far, so I don't know how they "operate". When do they open/close? I hear they run a lot of portable scales? I'm taking I94 to Fargo. What should I expect? Just need a little info please. Thanks!

Not sure on that scales hours but its usually open when I have went through during the day. I heard that lightning had hit it this summer and the scale was out of commission but I would assume its fixed now. After you get through there you wont have any other scales in MN. If you come back into MN on 94 that scale is always open during the day. I run through it a lot but only daylight hours so I cant say how early they open or how late they close. I am always empty and have been given the bypass lane every time except for once. They ran me across the scales and stopped me for some reason but im not sure why. They have a sign instructing you to turn your lights on so my only guess is they were looking for a light out??? As far as portables I have never seen them used on the interstate through there. They will occasionally set them up in areas where grain haulers, gravel haulers, etc. are running. Hope that helps a little.

That scale is a hit or miss but MN does a lot more roadside inspections it seems than other states

Thanks!! I always get a little nervous going into new territory. My equipment is in tip-top shape, but I'm like everyone else.. I try to avoid them if possible. I'm hoping they will just be closed in the evening time and I can just roll on. I'm permitted over 140K and sometimes states weigh me axle by axle (GA&IL) and some weigh by groups.

From my experience They usually open around 6 or 7AM and are shut down by 6 or 7 at night. Remember you have one in Menomonie, WI too on I-94 WB at about the 47 mile marker. Runs roughly the same hours normally.

The one on I-90 EB/WB in Minnesota (about the 260 mile marker) is only open about 4 times a year, during the DOT blitzes and when Minnesota decides to get a wild hair up their ###. I'm not sure what roads you can be permitted on being heavy. If you are coming from Madison, WI it is only about 20 miles farther to take I-90 west to US 52 north to the 494 loop in South Saint Paul.

Be aware if you do use this route for some reason, their is a temporary 35 foot length restriction on US 52 over the Mississippi River, so you would have to take the 494 loop around the south side of Minneapolis/St. Paul to get back to I-94 west, vs coming back to I-94 in downtown Saint Paul. I see the DOT writing tickets every day to truck drivers, bus drivers, and pickup truck drivers pulling goosenecks that don't know how to read signs.

    That Scale is something else..............

A few years back it was open in the day..........I pulled in and got the Right arrow to weigh...

The scaleman stopped me on the platform on red......For a SOLID MINUTE! Made me sweat somethin else...

he came out of the scalehouse and said "How are you"?....I answered nervously "This is my FIRST day on the job".... He said "Your first day"? I said Yeah...

He looked at me with my Thick Coke bottle glasses on and Smiled at me and told me to have a nice day.........i began Smirking uncontrollably before I could even get it in gear to leave......

No I was NOT smoking anything either...

Lol! Thanks for all the info! I usually don't get on these forums because you get a bunch of jokers and I ain't all about that. But you all have given me great info in a short notice!!!

Mickey - I have been there a time or two. I haul heavy so every time that happens to me, it usually cost me BIG$$$$! Cook County got me for $18,220 for not getting a toll permit to cross over an overpass. City cop got me. And to top it off, THE PERMIT WAS STINKIN FREE! So, I have learned to ask questions before I enter new territory.

The second green arrow for the bypass lane at the EB scale in Moorehead was burnt out most of the summer. I wanted to stop in so many times and issue a citizens citation for inoperative lights but I figured I should just keep rolling.:yes2557:

Where was this Bridge you crossed? How heavy were you? New Law in illinois Jan 1st........You cannot travel on the Tri-state tollway(permit or not) if you are over 55 ton 110,000 pounds

Cook county is bad when it comes to overweight-length...

I got an overweight AND length ticket back in 2008 in Maywood,Il on 1st ave (Class 2 road)

$1300....for being 79,000 and change on a 73,280 road PLUS he got me for overlength(He didnt have to do that)...That cop would NOT let me leave till it was paid......

way it goes....I KNEW it was a class 2 but took my chances
