Temporary safety check stops truckers on Loop 101

Temporary safety check stops truckers on Loop 101

7/9/07
Arizona Republic, AZ
Quote:
Motorists on the Chandler stretch of Loop 101 were greeted with an unusual sign telling truckers to pull off the freeway at Ray Road Monday.

The sign directed truckers to a temporary weigh station for a routine safety inspection.

"We don't announce these things," said Cydney DeModica, spokeswoman for the Arizona Motor Vehicle Division, when asked whether the station was meant to surprise truckers.
The division uses the stations to check permits, registrations and the condition of various safety equipment on commercial trucks driving throughout the state. The station was expected to be moved to another location on Tuesday.

Of the 14,000 inspection stations used last year, about 8,000 of them were located inside the state to check on intrastate truckers, DeModica said. The rest are positioned along the border of surrounding states and Mexico.

The MVD works with the Arizona Department of Public Safety and local city police departments to operate the temporary inspection stations. Inspectors can detain or fine truckers for missing paperwork or faulty safety equipment.

"Right now, there's a tremendous amount of vacation travelers that are traveling across the state and they need to know that trucks they share the road with are safe," DeModica said.

The MVD's commercial vehicle safety task force is especially concerned about truck brakes, tires and weight loads, she added.

Meanwhile, they waste the drivers' time and possibly cost them enough of that so they can't get loaded and,or delivered legally in the time frame allowed. Make sure your paperwork is in order wherever you go.

My hubby hates these things. He's a big one for getting loads there early and hates it when his "day" is messed up like this. It usually takes to long and noone is in any hurry to get you guys going again. They even had a drug sniffing dog going through trucks once. Hubby doesn't like animals, so that was a really hard one for him to swallow - having a dog in his truck, around his bed and food. Grossed him out big time!

He can REFUSE to allow dogs in his truck simply by stating he is allergic to them. They can't "force" him to allow the dogs in the truck.

I told him about the allergic thing - he said to tell you thanks - he'll remember that. He says they do it too because he has long hair , steroetyping. (but we all know that would never happen) lol

Thumbs down Oh, krapp!!

I drive the east Loop 101 occasionally---it's not a truckers route unless local. Problem in the east Loop 101 is speeding 4-whlrs and lots of resulting accidents!! Have even set up cameras to help control...truckers ARE NOT a problem there!!! That's all we need is more stuff to clog up that part of the Loop.......booo hiss!!

The last unanounced road side check I was in the fuzz never even looked at my paper work, never even talked to me.

Weighed, looked up DOT number, measured the wide part of my load and waved me on. I could handle that.
