Hours-of-service, EOBRs, CSA, speed limiters, medical examiner registry… the one-size-fits-all regulatory machine that we know as the FMCSA seems to never stop. New rules come through with justifications based on, in some cases, little more than FMCSA’s “belief” that they will improve safety.

Your representatives in Congress are at work right now writing the early versions of a new highway bill. Now is the time for you to take action and tell them that we are in a crisis and action is needed to end the current situation where the deck at FMCSA is stacked in favor of even more harmful regulations. Congress can include common sense provisions in the new highway bill that will force FMCSA to prove that the regulations they put in place actually improve highway safety. Further, FMCSA shouldn’t be the judge of when that proof has been shown – there needs to be an objective, independent judge.

The new highway bill should also include provisions requiring an independent review of current FMCSA regulations on the books, both the big ones and the small ones. Those rules that have an actual tie to reducing crashes should be the focus of FMCSA and law enforcement, not records of minor infractions that skew CSA scores and totally distort a trucker’s real safety record.

OOIDA has been working with allies on Capitol Hill to develop and advance these changes, but we need your help to get them included in the new legislation. If you have been negatively impacted by the new HOS rules, are concerned about EOBRs, or have seen your business suffer due to problems with CSA, now is the time to tell Congress that they need to enact changes that will fix the way FMCSA does business and force a focus on achieving safety results in a way that reduces burden on small trucking companies.

To tell your lawmaker you support a highway bill with these changes, click the link at the bottom of this message to visit an OOIDA website where you can send an e-mail to your representatives directly.

You can do this from your computer, your tablet, or from your smartphone.

You can also contact your U.S. House Member and two U.S. Senators through the U.S. Capitol switchboard at (202) 224-3121; simply provide the operator with your home zip code and they will connect you.

You are also welcome to call OOIDA at (800) 444-5791. Association staff will be happy to help put you in touch with your elected officials.
