(CNN) -- Tractor-trailer drivers, if you text while driving in the middle of the freeway, then the future may belong to you.
If you can afford a Mercedes truck, that is.
The German vehicle maker sent an 18-wheeler barreling down the Autobahn recently, while the driver surfed the Internet for food recipes on tablet computer -- at least that's how media photos told the story.
Its test drive was brief, covering about three miles, German media reported.
The trucker's hands didn't touch the wheel and his eyes were fixed on pork cutlets. But that could be the way some drive in the future, perhaps in the next decade or so.

I am expecting this to fail miserably in the usa. Still I really dont like where technology is going in this apsect. You know I still find it sad that the most common thing people do in everyday life is driving, yet most people fail at it bad. So now they want to put computer controlled cars and trucks with regular people whats going to happen when those fancy radars get iced up in the winter and the computer mistakenly applies the breaks.

What can go wrong with technology?

As i posted on the other 1700 threads, it will happen, and within the next 20 years, OTR will be done driverless.
It's called the normalcy effect to not believe it, it's why Hitler could round up the Jews so easily, they heard Jews were being rounded up in nearby towns, but they stayed put, because it couldn't happen to them.
in 1890, 94% if the population worked on a farm, in 2014, 3% of the US population works on a farm. We'll adapt.gpsman Thanks this. -

It could probably appear on the interstates in some form within 10 years, the technology is already developed. But I think a totally autonomous truck is many years down the road.

Just liberal fantasy it will never happen in our lifetime. If there was no such thing as lawsuits then yes. Or if they totally redesign our roads to be like train rails. A computer will not be able to figure out how to maneuver through a construction site. Sure you could add sensors, but they fail in different types of weather. Even if they somehow make it work, then they wouldnt want to replace such a huge workforce. There is cheap technology out now that can replace a lot of jobs but are still run by people. Especially since the breakdowns will cost more than having a person work it for $8 an hour.
