ATA Urges Congress

ATA Urges Congress to Require Drug and Alcohol Test Clearinghouse
8/1/07
Quote:
WASHINGTON, Aug. 1, 2007 -- American Trucking Associations President and CEO Bill Graves today urged Congress to authorize and fund a centralized clearinghouse for positive drug and alcohol testing results of commercial motor vehicle drivers to ensure that motor carrier employers are aware of previous positive test results during the hiring process.

Speaking at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., Graves said such a clearinghouse will improve the industry's ability to keep alcohol and drug abusers off the road and improve safety on the nation's roadways.

ATA has lobbied for a national clearinghouse of positive test results since the 1990s. In 2004 the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration reported to Congress on the merits of reporting positive test results to states. Currently, five states have instituted a drug and alcohol clearinghouse.

"ATA and its members believe that state-based reporting efforts are a good first step, but the optimal solution is a national clearinghouse," said Graves. "The trucking industry is a national industry. State by state action will result in a patchwork quilt of differing reporting requirements by different people, with different commercial driver licensing actions or outcomes for truck drivers depending upon which state issued their license. A national solution is the optimal approach to addressing this issue."

ID theft and all manner of ID corruption will be rampant. Or at least that is prediction from the Open Road morning show on Sirius.

Totally against this. If something like this is going to be set up, it needs to be set up for everybody to be subject to during the hiring process. No need for something specific to truckers.

ATA sucks.

Go figure!!!

Isn't it amazing that it would be the ATA that comes up with this "brilliant" idea? The same morons that want speed limiters of new and used trucks set to between 65 and 68 mph. The same morons that want nationwide B-trains pulled by those same old 435 hp trucks and in- experienced drivers that are already slowing up the trip, and rolling into the ditches.

OOIDA has more members than the ATA, but less money, and thus gets less influence. Say's alot about the people we send to congress, and who they serve..... themselves.

Well, thankfully, the OOIDA is big enough to at least stand up to some of what the ATA tries to do to drivers.

All the ATA cares about is doing things to make the big companies happy. All the back scratching going on there makes me sick.

just wondering who will get the contract? seems like EVERYtime the ATA supports something we get hit with another fee , and not small ones either, and some how a NEW company not in any way connected to the ATA or any of it's officers' relatives just happens to have just started up and gotten govornment approval(before anything was passed). By the way these companies that have so much influence on drivers lives i.e. hazmat, dock ect. do such a wonderful job . wonder if they are recruited form FEMA?

Angry

A driver high on crack can kill at most 75-100 people in one accident.

A politician high on crack, can kill millions with a simple voice command.

Yet no one demands they be tested ...at any point in their life/career.

Am i the only one who notices all the four wheelers running around our highways with open beers in their lap? The politicians could care less about highway safety and are more concerned about finding a publicly acceptable scapegoat such as the trucking industry. Cant wait to hear A heavy truck caused the I35 bridge collapse.
