I just came across this interesting sidebar in the July 2014 issue of Commercial Carrier Journal where a Yokohama Tire exec breaks down fuel efficiency. For every dollar spent on fuel:
- 60 percent is wasted by engine inefficiency
- 21 percent is wasted by aerodynamic drag
o 50 percent is wasted by the drive position
o 35 percent is wasted by the trailer position
o 15 percent is wasted by steer position
- 13 percent is consumed by overcoming tire rolling resistance (average of all tread types)
- 4 percent is consumed by the load
- 2 percent is consumed by the drivetrain

Based on this info, efficient engines are by far the most important keys to fuel efficiency. What are some of the fuel economy improvements you’ve made to your engine?

Since I'm a company driver, I can't "tune" the engines on the truck I drive. But I can tell you driving for an outfit that actually sets the HP ratings high where they are meant to be, combined with tall gears in the rear axle. I am getting better fuel mileage with 500-550 HP engines and 13 speeds or 12 speed autos than I ever was with the detuned small displacement motors with 10 speeds.

Most Large and medium sized carriers, at least the ones i have worked for, detune their engines or order a low HP setup (450 HP or less), and spec it with a useless 10 speed Eaton Fuller transmission. Good setup for the Ohio turnpike or the flats in North Dakota . Get to any type of hill and you are always rowing down into the gears just to get to the top of the hill, causing more drivetrain wear and fuel useage.

Like Rawze.com had told us time after time. CLEAN THAT INTAKE SYSTEM! With carb&choke cleaner. Take the intake manifold off, the mixing pipe, the EGR tubing etc take it all off and get all the soot and gum build up out of there. And replace the sensors located on that system (mine is Delta-P and IMAP sensors)

Big power cat or a cat in general with proper rears and trans. One of my favorite set-ups was my 475 car 13 super and 3.70s. That set up worked perfectly for the north east.

Slowing down. Picked up a good 1 mpg or more by going from 65 to 60.
