I was as dumb as a stump about what you pros do, how you do it, and the fact that everything in my house came by truck. Until I found this site and decided to educate myself. I think, to most people, trucking is one of those things you see everyday by the hundreds on the highway, but never really give it any thought. So, allow me to speak for the millions who have no idea.......you guys rock!

Some have been reporting a driver shortage for a number of years. It simply isn't true. Several years ago when the economy tanked some of the mega carriers who were flush with cash thought that they could gain market share by buying more trucks in anticipation of the economy turning around. When the economy didn't recover as quickly as they had hoped, they were stuck with more trucks than drivers. If you look at the roads and truck stops I don't see how anyone could think that there is a REAL driver shortage. There is a high turnover rate, but it is lower today than a few years ago. I have said this a number of times on other similar threads, but will say it again. If there were really a driver shortage we would see a considerable increase in wages and freight rates. Rates are up somewhat, but not to the extent that I would be convinced that there was a shortage of drivers or trucks. Elogs are putting a strain on some carriers as are the constant changes to the hos. But, I don't see it creating the shortage that some would have us believe.

    No shortage of drivers.
Shortage of drivers willing to work for wages paid 25 years ago.
I know plenty of 2 and 3 million milers who have simply walked away, many because of the asinine rules and regs. brought forth by the ATA.
I see this a way to open the flood gates to bring in many more foreign drivers who will work for the low wages.

Wow G/MAN, are you on the same planet as the rest of us? I don't like disagreeing with anyone, as it just throws gas on a tire fire, but there is indeed a driver shortage. I go by CL and just what this guy said in the video and that was 2 years ago, he could add 50 drivers right now! It's a pretty good indication of what's out there. I casually scan CL several times a week, just in case that "miracle job" presents itself (nothing yet), and I've watched the transport openings steadily grow from 40 or 50 openings, to 140 the other day, more than any other classification. And that was just in Milwaukee, Chicago CL has over 300 openings. I'm sorry, but if you don't think there's a driver shortage, you are in the same boat as the newscaster.

You must not be looking hard enough, here there is a huge driver shortage.Alot of companies are paying more then a few yrs ago.Just take a gander in ads, websites anywhere that is a posting looking for drivers. They increase the pay as well as a sign on bonus. But for me what ive seen the pay is still an insult to the drivers intelligence. Now the companies that receive subsidies aren't real hart up for drivers but they are the government money. The small to medium are desparate as well as the local companies. But megas like Werner, they hire more drivers then freight.Besides the pay there are many factors why the high turn over rate and demand for drivers, csa, rules and regs, hos you name it.I never had such an easy time finding work as I do now and I have a real bad work history but my mvr is clean and no csa or hos violations.A few yrs ago my work history would have played a factor but not anymore.

There is a driver shortage, a shortage of qualified safe drivers, these companies have figured out a way to combat the problem, if you can fog a mirror, or come from another industry, they will train you. My driving force headed towards retirement is to make sure I don't get hurt or killed by a mirror fogger. After listening to these companies all these years spin this shortage tale, I can honestly say this, you reap what you sow. Pay more, change the conditions in this industry and then maybe drivers with 15, 20, and 30+ years would stay in the industry instead of leaving it. Rant over.

Hi 6 Speed, that's exactly the reason I got out of it. I got tired of risking my life (and others lives) working long hours, failed marriage(mostly thanks to trucking)for the same wage as someone pushing buttons on a computer sipping energy drinks( not that there's anything wrong with that). I suppose the rules I could live with, but to put these people that run the drug testing agencies and company owners in fancier houses every year, and enjoying several hundred thousand dollar toys ( a truck company owner in Canada showed off his "mini 18 wheeler toy", that cost him 200K dollars), while the driver gets paid a mediocre wage, is just too much for me.
