    K. So is there a criminal code for abandoning a trailer? The guy basically told 'em to take that job and shove it. He will never work in the industry again...We know that.

The papers he signed most likely stated that the shipper and carrier can sue him for the losses.

Again...Is it a crime to abandon a trailer? He left the trailer on private property not on public property.

The truck is another story. If he stole it then that would be grand theft of whatever. He didn't steal the trailer tho. He parked it. It appears, according the reports, that he may have given them ample warning that he may do that.

If a roofing company (or employee) walks off a job for whatever reason and doesn't complete the job they haven't committed a crime unless of course they received compensation up front. They get sued for violating the contract and get a bad reputation.

Forget about the missing truck and ethics for the time being. Is it a crime to quit the job and abandon a trailer as a truck driver?

It's a crime to steal the truck. It became a crime when he took the truck and trailer and not return it. So yes, he committed a criminal act and a public health issue.

I didnt read all the comments here, but reading the article has me puzzled. Why havent they started up the reefer, set if to well below freezing, then move the trailer to a landfill? That would make sense to me. Plus, having it refreeze everything will mitigate some of the stench. Not all of it, but some.

Driver Demanded Money to Deliver Chicken Truck

MISSOULA, Mont. — A truck containing 37,000 pounds of now-rotten chicken may have sat in a western Montana truck stop for more than a month while its driver texted and called his employer demanding money, police said.

The driver abandoned the trailer at some point after Dixie River Freight Inc. refused his demands, and he left the frozen cargo worth $80,000 to thaw and then rot when the fuel for the trailer's refrigeration unit ran out.

The trailer still sat at the Flying J Truck Stop west of Missoula on Thursday, dripping rancid juices onto the concrete and attracting flies. Police in Nampa, Idaho, are searching for the driver, 42-year-old Christopher Hall, who had been wanted for a parole violation and now faces a possible theft charge.

The truck was discovered Tuesday, though Nampa police Sgt. Joe Ramirez said it may have been left there more than a month ago.

Hall picked up the trailer in Springdale, Arkansas, on Aug. 20 and was supposed to deliver it to Kent, Washington, the next day, police said.

Hall texted and called Dixie River Freight several times for more money, but the company refused to pay him until he delivered the load, Ramirez said.

The freight company reported the truck stolen on Aug. 27 when it did not arrive, police said. The trailer's refrigerator apparently continued running until the fuel ran out, finally drawing attention — and the flies — to the load.

On Thursday, the trailer was surrounded by sawhorses and crime-scene tape at the truck stop as temperatures approached the 90-degree range for a second straight day.

Alisha Johnson with the Missoula City-County Health Department said Dixie River's insurance company was in charge of cleaning up the mess — and it's not a simple job.

I think it's absolutely hilarious how quickly drivers are willing to throw another driver to the wolves...hence the reason why I stopped driving recently and will likely never go back. Truckers are typically big time corporate brown-nosers that think kneeling to the corporations will somehow get them some doggy treats and this is why this corrupt/criminal industry will likely never change. How come you never hear about the millions of dollars lost in wages due to companies paying less than minimum-wage to drivers, DAC Reports being used as retaliation against drivers through blacklisting (I am personally a victim of this, Stevens Transport btw, very crooked and corrupt company), complete disregard for truckers time by shippers and receivers taking 8 hours to load/unload and drivers being cheated out of detention pay and layover pay and over regulation? But you drivers want to get on your soapboxes and play Dudley Do-Right over some multi-million dollar company losing out on 80k? Give me a break. Yes, stealing is wrong, but I don't see ANY companies standing up for drivers.

However, you will find no shortage of shills commenting on stories like this grabbing their ankles for the companies as if they honestly need your defense. The Millions every year stolen from drivers pales in comparison to this event. Let's talk about THAT. Let's get ABC News to give THIS some shine, eh? No? We only care about Corporations being scammed in this country? Okies..

How about not breaking the law??? How about, if the company is doing you wrong, you be the better man??? Now this idiot will go to jail for what he did. Was that worth it? Is my thinking being a "shill"? I think not.

My dad taught me to rules to live by. Don't steal, someone had to work hard for it. Also, don't damage other peoples stuff they worked too hard to get that too.

I get the drivers point about demanding better wages, but better ways to go about it. Get off our lazy bumbs and write your Congressman and Senator, strike, or just find a better job. But don't steal its just wrong.

The trucking company will have to REDO their web site as "When you choose to ship with us, you're shipping with a company that takes honestly, integrity and professionalism seriously. Our driver's and staff have a proven record and are committed to getting your freight where it needs to be on time" just aint the truth

Arkansas to Kent washington in one day ???

I really sense foul play with the whole situation because I read that the trailer was reported stolen aug 27 th but was just now found ?

I dont know , maybe I am reading it wrong but seems to me that there is a totally nother side to this story . I am sure it will never surface just like the K&B dispatcher that tried to force that poor boy to do his job. Lol

NAMPA, Idaho — Authorities in Idaho have arrested the driver thought to have abandoned a trailer containing 37,000 pounds of rotten chicken at a western Montana truck stop.
The Greater Idaho Fugitive Task Force in Meridian found Christopher Hall, 42, on Friday afternoon, Nampa police Lt. Eric Skoglund said.
Police say the trailer might have been sitting at the Flying J Truck Stop west of Missoula, Montana, for a month before it was discovered this week with rancid juices from the cargo dripping onto the pavement and attracting flies.
Hall abandoned the trailer after his employer, Dixie River Freight Inc., refused his demands for more money to deliver its then-frozen cargo to Kent, Washington, according to police.
He left the chicken worth $80,000 to thaw and then rot when the fuel for the trailer's refrigeration unit ran out.
Hall has not been charged with any crimes related to the abandoned trailer, but he was picked up on a parole violation. He now faces a possible theft charge.
The Nampa-based trucking company reported the trailer missing Aug. 27, and Nampa police Sgt. Joe Ramirez said it might have been at the truck stop for more than a month.
The trailer was towed Friday morning to a landfill a few miles down Interstate 90 after Dixie River's insurance company filled out the necessary paperwork and holes in the trailer were plugged, said Alisha Johnson, a Missoula County Health Department environmental specialist.
The putrid load was dumped into the fresh pit with a bulldozer standing by to cover it, the Missoulian reported.
Hall picked up the trailer Aug. 20 in Springdale, Arkansas, and was supposed to deliver it to Washington the next day. He texted and called Dixie River Freight several times for more money, but the company refused to pay him until he delivered the load, Ramirez said.
"He was asking for fuel money, living expenses, those kind of things, in exchange for taking the truck to its appropriate location where it was supposed to be dropped," Ramirez told KTVB-TV in Boise.
The Volvo truck that hauled the trailer was discovered Thursday in the parking lot of a Nampa Walmart.
There is no public health hazard at the Flying J Truck Stop, and the cleanup should be relatively simple, Johnson said.
"There's really not that much there," she said. "Some of the pictures make it look like a river running out of the trailer, but it was really just a few drips every few minutes."

-I wonder what's true. Did the company fail to pay him enough to get by, or was he being whiny and bad with money? It may be a while til we know the truth. there's no denying he's done some bad things in the past, but if a company won't pay enough for fuel and necessities, he very well may have felt trapped. I'm not condoning his illegal behavior. There's the right way to quit when things aren't working out, but I think there's more to this case we aren't getting yet. Second thing, is this possible to do anywhere near legally? I've never driven a truck, but the distance from Springdale, Arkansas to Kent, Washington seems impossible to do in 22 hours. Google maps shows it to be about 2000 miles.
