Luo, the truck driver, was shocked by the expensive charge. After bargaining, the price was finally reduced to 21 thousand yuan.

"Part of the truck ran out of roadbed, so we could charge without following the charging standard of highway rescue. The price should be negotiated by the two sides. The reason for setting the price so high is because rescue in the highway is very difficult and risky," the staff member added.
However, Luo said the staff members did not negotiate with him before towing the truck.
The Price Bureau of Liuyang City also said the relevant regulation for rescue charges in highway is only valid for the rescue inside the roadbed. Therefore, the authority can not intervene as the rescue work was carried out outside the roadbed.

    21,000 yuan, I'm assuming it's $4500 according to Chinatown.

Actually 1 yuan = .16 USD, so the final bill was $3,360.

I think they negotiated it down to $3500.00 if not mistaken. Looks like the towing company was the closest which was 3 miles. That's the problem; prices are set if the truck is on the roadbed, but if even one wheel is off the roadbed, they can charge what they want.

When I think about it, that's cheap. A reefer company I worked for, one driver pulled onto the shoulder in Oak Ridge, TN to check his atlas. The warm tires melted the ice about 1/4 inch and the truck wouldn't move & he didn't know about carrying cat litter during winter months. Tow truck pulled him about 10 feet to bare pavement. Refused to unhook unless he was paid $5000.00 and the goofy assistant terminal manager negotiated it down to $2000.00 and was really patting himself on the back for outsmarting the tow truck driver.

Yes, it fluctuates a little throughout the day. Right now it's $1.00 USD = 6.13 Yuan/RMB.

I was hanging around in China off and on when the Yuan was pegged at around 8 Yuan = 1 USD which was great. 6.13 is still pretty good exchange rate. There will always be a huge trade imbalance as long as the Yuan isn't allowed to float.

You can't have another truck (not tow truck) pull you out? Don't they have set rates for towing or get an estimate before they pull you? $2000 seems excessive.

What happened is the reefer company had a contract with a towing company for all towing in that area. In this case the towing company outsourced this particular tow to some one truck renegade outfit on a phone call, nothing in writing.

In some SE Asia countries, it's probably cheaper to have the tow truck driver killed, than to pay him.

Maybe the price will drop if you mention that to him? :)
