    says it all right here....

"We don't think it's so much a driver shortage as it is a driver pay shortage," Tam said.

It's good to see at least a few carriers are "starting to get it". The job sucks in general and has many very serious negatives. And to have to do that same job for what amounts to "weak wages" did not make any sense on multiple levels except to those who didn't have a head on their shoulders or who were too desperate to be concerned with the real "costs" and could only see a "decent paycheck" that was a better then what was available locally near their family.

A Step In The Right Direction, but if steady miles are not available than a CPM increase wont have anybody in their right mind beating down the door .....

This is true. Steady miles are always going to be an issue at the mega dry van carriers but a "raise" is a raise. Somebody is going to be netting more pay and it beats a "signing bonus" that ends in a year that effectively translates into a pay cut for subsequent years unless they soon offer a company wide pay raise like noted in this story, which does not happen very often in this industry and especially in this economic climate.

Just left Schneider recently, too low of pay for the stresses required, No Idle during 95-100+ temps(that nearly cost me my life 4-5 times this summer), 60 mph and other unbearable conditions, like a bunk heater that gave me 35-45 degree bunk temps, at least 8 different mornings, last winter and every maintenance shop was 2-7 days behind schedule.......... Even at 25-50% I doubt I could feel fairly compensated under their present conditions and expectations. "for most.........." is a functional fuzzy statement. A nominalization, a possible distortion, and definitely just a rumor at this point .... I'm skeptical, but it's a start, and will probably be a long time before another one happens, if it really happens. a few other companies have 2-3 of the equivalent boosts in the last 5-10 years.
