Unfortunately the abuse of the H2B visa continues.

This is the same visa type I entered the country on. At the time, the companies were genuinely having trouble finding drivers - and still are now.

Mine was borderline dodgy - the visa is intended for seasonal agricultural work - not OTR reefer as was my case.

There is no shortage of drivers. There is a shortage of companies willing to pay their drivers properly and to stand up for acceptable treatment at shippers and receivers. Many of the large carriers have a turnover rate exceeding 100 percent. If they can hire and fire the equivalent of the entire driving force each year than obviously there are more than adequate numbers of drivers. Another problem is recruiters misrepresenting the jobs they offer. Drivers believe the bs then become disenchanted and move on to other companies or change trades completely. If companies would compensate drivers and bill shippers and receivers for wait time, and get away from micromanaging every minute of a drivers time they might find drivers more plentiful.

It only goes to prove, prices are going up in the stores, fuel is down in price, wages for truckers is dirt cheap and now we will have more illegal aliens who have entered this country taking more wages away from the market just because they are cheaper. No one is winning, esp the drivers who live here.

The wait at shippers and receivers is terrible for truckers, taking up valuable time. If the place can't schedule appointments and get the job done in a couple of hours, they need to pay detention time. Some of these places are taking 5-6 hrs or more, no overnight parking, no bathrooms or anything else and the FM's/DM's think it is cute if you have to stay at a truckstop down the road and you have to break your break and move, then no time on the other end to deliver without being late. Drivers take the ha, ha, you're it.

"they need to pay detention time. "

a few companies do, such as Marten. Dont mean to say they are the best just one good example and that is also likely why they appear to have good driver retention but from what ive read their 401k sucks , something like 10cents on the dollar. Oh yeah someone can retire on that.........

SADLY & UNFORTUNATELY, trucking may be going in the direction of various other occupations, slowly but drastically being being replaced by (illegal) immigrant workers. This has already happened in other occupations as agriculture, dairy farming, ranching, construction, manufacturing, meat packing, poultry processing, retailing, trash collection, warehousing, and the loading docks, (including the waterfronts).

For the employers who engage in these illegal or unscrupulous practices, it is economically advantageous for them to do so.

There is nothing but pure profit in their "bottom lines" because they are able to avoid paying minimum wage, overtime, social security & Medicare taxes, workman's compensation taxes, and unemployment compensation taxes. Also, they are able to "circumvent" health & safety laws meant to protect the American worker.

There is no economic incentive for these employers to operate legally because they find it too expensive to hire and retain Americans who were born & raised in the U.S.A., or immigrants who are LEGAL immigrants.

SADLY & UNFORTUNATELY, the federal government has NOT gone out of its way to aggressively enforce the immigration laws currently "on the books". Chances are, there are probably "federal watchdogs" looking in the opposite or the wrong direction.

There are trucking companies, along with other companies, that do NOT have retirement plans for their employees at all. Many hardworking Americans go their whole lives working for companies that do NOT offer retirement plans for their employees.
