I think this may be warranted. They're trying to keep truckers from getting into a situation they can't get out of (regardless of their "skills") and can find no safe haven. Travel is going to come to a halt and you can bet they probably don't have their full roster of snow abatement workers reporting to work either what with many probably put in for time off months ago.

Anywhere you get 8+ inches inside of 6 hours, and with perhaps somewhat limited manpower resources, you can forget about anyone being able to keep the road "clear", then add in a LOT of desperate thanksgiving travelers into the mix? Forget it. Deep snow that is only been packed and rutted with traffic is very treacherous and impossible for some vehicles to traverse.

I agree with that. I guess my issue is that they cancel school, restrict drivers, all on a chance that the snow will be that bad. I remember growing up in the 70's, school wasn't canceled until that morning. And, only if there were several inches on the ground and it was still falling.

Sounds like someone important in your school district was looking for an extended Thanksgiving break. Hope its not going to be like last winter where Cuomo would have the thruway closed with 6" of snow.

This is where the exponential growth mathematics come into play. There were an estimated 90k million miles driven in November of 1970. In November of 2013, there were about 240k million miles driven. That's a whole lot of additional traffic jammed into essentially the same roads. You cram more and more cars and trucks into close proximity of one another, and you're going to have more crashes. No ifs ands or buts.

I think it is ridiculous, they are calling for 3-6 inches on the eastern side. It wasn't even snowing here when the ban started. I hate this state and can't wait till my wife retires and we move out of here.

I think they close schools before the first flake falls because someone, somewhere, slipped and fell and thought....."I am gunna sue"!

To be fair, planners and emergency responders MUST rely on the best predictions of trained weather forecasters and computer models, as far in advance as possible. They are potentially in a lose-lose position no matter what they do, depending on how mother-nature actually plays out. The snow amount forecasts 2 days ago were considerably more then they are forecasting the day of the event. Things change and Wx forecasting is hardly an exact science and today, many people seem to have come to expect perfection, and they expect perfect forecasting 2-3 days out, as well.

That is it 100%! They get to sue the school system for not closing the schools and putting kids in danger. Then they get to sue the bus Co. for the same thing when the bud skids on ice and hits something.

When I left truck driving school last night at 5pm school was still on for today. I asked if they were going out driving today and said have to see.
Going to stop by DMV for a HAZMAT book so can study next few days before I go to school.

    Be safe out there
