Thirty-two truckers were pulled over by Minnesota State Patrol and Stillwater police officers in downtown Stillwater on Monday morning, the first day of a crackdown targeting semi-tractor trailer traffic in the city.
Truckers were cited for offenses including driving without a log book and driving overweight vehicles. Officers say many truckers use the Stillwater Lift Bridge to avoid inspections at the St. Croix Weigh Station on Interstate 94.
Thirteen trucks were immediately pulled out of service and had either to be fixed on site or towed, said Sgt. Glen Bjornberg, saturation coordinator for the Minnesota State Patrol's commercial vehicle section. Two drivers were told to quit driving immediately, he said. One of those cited, a tow truck operator from Chicago, was pulled over for driver fatigue. Drivers are allowed to drive for 11 hours, and Bjornberg said it was likely the driver was trying to avoid the I-94 weigh station.
