Today, the FMCSA announced the agency’s intent to conduct a study on “the impact of driver compensation on commercial motor vehicle safety.”

The FMCSA is seeking the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) for its approval to conduct the study, “‘The Impact of Driver Compensation on Commercial Motor Vehicle Safety,’ to assess the current compensation practices of commercial vehicle drivers and the potential influence this may have on safe commercial vehicle operations.”

The FMCSA says the study will evaluate the relationship between driver compensation and incidences of unsafe driving.

The study will focus on if there is a relationship between driver pay and unsafe driving behavior. #The study will be conducted via online survey.

Carriers will be randomly selected to participate in the study.

The FMCSA says the study will help motor carriers by “enabling them to make informed decisions regarding driver compensation as it relates to safe driving performance,” the FMCSA Federal Register states.

The study’s results will be announced in 2015.

Why don't they instead focus on “the impact of driver experience on commercial motor vehicle safety.”. While you can argue that driver pay and driver experience are inter-related, that's not what they are trying to accomplish with a flawed study. They are trying to say that maybe paying someone another nickle a mile makes them a safer driver, and I say that's BS. They will fail to see that the one who is making a nickel a mile more also probably has another year under their belt and will try and say all you have to do is pay a little more to green drivers, and voila' more safe drivers on the road. Typical coming from a twisted ideology branching out to the FMCSA under this administration.

I can just about guarantee you the question "How many years experience does driver(s) in question have at time of incident according to their past work history?" will never appear on such a study. Not saying experience guarantees a safer driver. I'm saying experience needs to be considered and also factored into such a study since you're going to the trouble. It's just one more simple question to pose to the carrier.

I will say this much the company's that pay by the load like the local fuel hauling companies to when you pay by the load you encourage the driver to drive like a bat outta hell if paying by the hour and they will take their time and be safer no of course you'll have a few bad apples no matter what you do but simply put get rid of pay by the load

Just one more worthless "study" that those clowns at the FMCSA agency dreamt up over a breakfast committee meeting.
Nothing better to do I guess. But should we be surprised.
But its a nice distraction from their punitive rules/regulations.
Instead I would like to see an independent study on the impact of HOS, CSA scores, Govt/FMCSA/DOT interference, meddling and all forms of micromanagement.
How do those components influence/impact the mindset of the CDL holder as he goes about his business.
It would be a welcome change to hold their collective feet to the fire.
Lets make an INDEPENDENT study, not one where the fox is in charge of the chicken coop, as in this so called "study" pertaining to the justification
of the 34 hr reset and 1am-5am break.
Because we all know that the FMCSA are hell bent on "proving" that the roll back needs to be reinstated because their "study" has proved it beyond a reasonable doubt.
Don't hold your breath on this one.
