In the "News Flash" today, it seems the "Real Women in Trucking" segment was overshadowed by the ATA's recommendation for 18 year old's to drive semi's. That's a shame, as I feel this is a group that really needs to be praised. When I started trucking in the '70's, you never saw a woman in a truck, and if you did, they were pretty rough ladies. Today, nearly 200,000 women drive trucks, a significant number in any job field. Women, because of their calm demeanor (generally) make excellent drivers. My ex-gf (still friends) is a trucker, and has been since the early 80's. She grew up on a farm and was a natural born gear-jammer, right from the start. Some of the stories she would tell me of the abuse she took, would curl your hair, and I'm not talking about the occasional "man flash", but real issues that would send most people running. No women's shower's, harassment at loading docks, even from family members, to name a few. I told her to write a book about her experiences, but she's too humble, and says, "I'm just doing my job". A tip of the hat to these women, and I, for one, would love to hear of some these women's experiences and why they chose this profession. :smt023

I found the same to be true when I was flying for a living.
Women, in most cases, were better pilots and I'd rather fly with one when I got the chance.
They showed more attention to detail in the aircraft, were better at spotting trends in weather and instrument indications enroute, didn't end up in positions where they had to make aggressive corrections because they were on top of things and generally didn't have the macho arrogance most of us guys do in pushing a bad position and not requesting help if needed.

I have a lady friend (winkwink)that is an owner operator in the oil fields of west Texas. I have the utmost respect for what she does and how she conducts her business. Being an African American and a woman and an owner operator she has managed to put it all together and run a profitable truck for the last 5 years in the business. So I give a shout and a big thumbs up to all the ladies in in trucking. Get your roll on ladies.........
GypsyMamma, jmina and 201 Thank this.
