'In the Land of Hell': Life as a Female Trucker in North Dakota

I watched it yesterday. Very dark, and almost makes you think she was put into the sex trade. However, camp life in Fort Mac up here in Canada is like that too, except the money is actually good.

 

I feel bad for her, but I'm an over emotional kind of guy. The fact she doesn't talk with her parents is a red flag, issues upon issues. I couldn't imagine not talking to my daughter. Some of the comments are pretty harsh, I think she's trying, but is putting too much effort into something that probably isn't there. It seems she doesn't have any real ties there, so she should get out, and try again in a more woman friendly environment. I doubt ND is that place. Seems like a good kid.

 

When I worked the Williston Basin back in the early 80's there were only a few women brave enough to work in the oil patch at all. You wouldn't want to mess with them, they fought like men and were very adept at defending themselves. Women that lived in the area pretty much avoided where the oil workers hung out because it just plain wasn't safe for them. I could imagine it isn't any better for women these days either.

 

Good post! I don't feel bad for her though, not sure that was her intent either. As a born and raised SOUTH Dakotan there's no way you'll get me to move up to Western North Dakota and live in a trailer for 6 months of winter. People need to educate themselves before making decisions. A lot of people have gone up there from AZ where I live now and have no idea what winter on the Northern Plains is like, especially in a trailer. I will say this though, good for her! She's not on the public dole milking the system. She's contributing in some of the harshest weather on the planet.

She complains about no one to go get her nails done with. boo hoo...

 

I'm with passingthru - what did she expect was going to happen? "I can't even go out..." What, not enough nite clubs in North Dakota's oil patch? Wait 'til oil's back above $80/bbl, there'll be plenty. It's like the OP was expecting an active nite life and is all sad and lonely now. Maybe it's me, but I have little patience for this kind of whining. It should have been obvious before she ever went there. Maybe if she'd gone up with a lady buddy things would have been more acceptable.

 

i pulled a rock trailer there for 10 mos. till i got fed up with all the bs associated with road contruction and my boss not getting paid which meant i didnt get paid ...amazing how in a place that reeks of money and everyone is drivin a 50k pick up how hard it is to get your money .
i had it made compared to alot of people , i lived in a fema trailer that my boss paid for but it was on private land and had sewer and water .
i grew up in no.dakota so the winters there wernt a real shock for me but the greed , bad attitudes , and total disregard for the laws and fmcsa rules among most of the rock haulers there was unbeliveable .
if i had the money i would go back and open a glass shop or suspension shop cause ya cant keep a windshield in anything there and a mechanic in sidney mt told me he routinely sees pick ups of all makes that have less than 50k on them that the springs shocks bushings and brakes are shot .
not a great environment there for man or machine .
