I've read about the ongoing development of autonomous or "self-driving" trucks but just recently ran across this video that gives a little more insight on how it works. I don't know whether to clap or cry. In an environment where drivers are increasing harder to find, is this the future of trucking? I'd like to hear your thoughts on the notion of trucks that drive themselves. The wave of the future or just plain foolishness???

It's coming, might as well prepare for it. Anything that takes a paid human out of the equation is good for business.

We'll all be dead and never see a driverless truck. Computers are far from fail proof. There is no need to worry until all passenger planes fly with no pilots whatsoever. They've had the technology to fly planes by computer for several years. But all it takes is for a computer to crash and there would be an instant disaster if nobody was there to take over. Same goes for trucks.

They have auto pilot for airplanes also. Still have pilots onboard. Don't think we will see it. I hope to have the option to retire in 10 years. Grandkids might.

-Before you see driverless trucks, you will see Australian Road Trains (8-10) 53's behind 1 tractors running the interstates.

It seems to have a hard time staying in the lane! Walmart has already invested millions in computer assist trucks, but that's all they'll ever be. You still need someone to take control in cities and on state roads. These things only "drive" on the highways. And of course, they can't get the bills signed, or load or unload a trailer. Drivers will always be around, at least for next 100 years, or until the Aliens give us better technology! :)

    Lol @ the hopefuls.

Ask coal miners and auto plant guys what they thought 15 years ago...

Self driving trucks? Sounds good to me. I'll go work for a mega who will pay me to sit shotgun to make sure the computer doesn't murder the person driving their prius who cut the truck off trying to make their exit.

Even better... I wonder if the computer would argue with dispatch for me!

Oh I know. Instead of riding shot gun they'll pay me to sit at a computer desk and be ready to take over the controls at a moments notice... I could just go down the hall to argue with dispatch that my bot has been sitting for three days and that I ain't getting no miles! Lol

More seriously... I truly believe we will send freight through the air with high weight capacity drones in the future.

They will argue that it will be a safer alternative to having so many trucks on the road. I think there is a better chance of that happening in a large scale than self driven trucks.

I can see how a truck can drive itself in a straight line on the highway but like the video said, it will never totally replace the driver. You still will need a driver to talk to cops after the truck runs over some nimrod that cut across 3 lanes to make an exit. Someone said earlier that the driver would also be needed to load and unload the trailer. Maybe we all will be reduced to city drivers/lumpers!
