DOT to inspect Mexican, U.S. trucks in D.C. to prove safety standards met

DOT to inspect Mexican, U.S. trucks in D.C. to prove safety standards met

10/16/07

Quote:
WASHINGTON — U.S. Transportation Secretary Mary Peters and her south-of-the-border counterpart, Mexican Secretary of Communications and Transportation Luis Tellez, along with U.S. Commerce Secretary Carlos M. Gutierrez, have scheduled a news conference Wednesday afternoon to demonstrate that Mexican trucks that cross the border to deliver freight inside the U.S. will meet and have met, stringent U.S. safety standards.

The trio is also expected to call on Congress to cease in its efforts to halt the Mexico truck demonstration project.

Two trucks will be inspected during the news conference, one a Mexican truck, the other a truck belonging to a U.S. carrier.

The Mexican truck to be inspected is the first one that was driven into the U.S. under the demonstration project. It is owned by Transportes Olympic of Nuevo Leon, Mexico.
The news conference will mark at least the second time this year that Peters and Tellez have stood side by side.

Last February the pair met at El Paso, Texas, to formally announce the demonstration project.

I agree. I personally think, that transport, to and from anywhere in Mexico, and or Canada should be open to all. We should have a North American Trucking Alliance or something similiar established, in order to allow easier access to transport. I think it would be mutually benificial for all three countries.
Granted I agree that all parties involved should have a FAST card or something similiar. That's fair.
We should be able to pick up a load in Canada, and transport it to another spot in Canada. All truckers in all three countries would benefit don't you think? That'd mean less waiting time, and more loads, and more miles.

I've talked with Mexican drivers. They are very happy with $120 a week, no limit on their hours.
Would you be?

When they operate in the US, they are required to adhere to the HOS in place here.

The sad part is I know exactly what you are talking about from my experience with the Pennsylvania State Police.
