| Truckers Not Surprised by Crash Truckers Not Surprised by Crash 10/18/07 Quote:
Veteran truck drivers say a blind curve in a darkened tunnel was an accident waiting to happen but more importantly, they add, someone in the past 18 months made it possible for truckers to drive through it faster.
Half a dozen truckers, unknown to each other and interviewed Wednesday at the Castaic truck stop off Interstate 5 at Parker Road, called the tunnel in which three people died in a fiery crash Friday night dangerous and cited several other factors that could have contributed to the tragedy.
Topping their list of concerns, however, was the speed limit.
The speed limit sign was changed within the last 18 months, they said, from 45 mph to 55 mph.
"It used to be posted for 45 but now it's posted 55," said Ontario trucker Maynor Pineda. "It was changed probably a year ago, maybe a year and a half."
Pineda, who owns his own rig as M&L Pineda Transport and hauls only liquid loads for Quality Carriers, has been driving trucks for more than 21 years and drives regularly through the tunnel.
"It's a blind curve when you enter the tunnel," he said. "And, you can't really see what's at the end of the tunnel."
Having extensive experience driving through it, Pineda was asked to speculate about what happened the night of the crash.
