Car drivers should give truckers more respect
10/20/07
Quote:
I am disgusted about how little respect four-wheelers - cars - have for others on the road.

I drive a semi and have for 24 years. Every day I have to deal with ignorant drivers.

I-55 in the construction zone is the worst. So many four-wheelers think they have to be first into the lane closure. When they hit the barricades, they flip us off, among other things.

Ninety-five percent of the time, we are in the right lane ahead of time. We can read and follow directions. Obviously, they can't.

Yet the 65 mph speed limit will not go through for us truckers.

Yes, a truck will kill. Do the math: 2-ton car vs 40-ton truck. Now, who do you think will come out ahead?

I would love to see a law passed that no one can get a drivers license without taking a course on semis and a Department of Transportation physical every two years.

This is our job. Don't mess with us when we are working. Think about it.

But until then, next time I come into a construction zone and I am following the rules and you think you must be first and pull one of your stupid tricks, don't expect to get in. You can just eat the barricades and deal with it.

I went thru some hick town in either GA or AL the other day. This was a 2 lane road with a truck speed of 55 and cars 65. It was this way for a few miles. Hill and curves. Duh, what idiot thought of this??

Drive in California on the 2 lanes. 55 for truck, cars sometimes as much as 70 but normally 65.

On a TWO lane highway??? How stupid is THAT?

Should be the other way around if you ask me. Most truckers are much superior drivers to those who drive cars.

Tell me about it. It was a 2 lane. Can't recall exactly where it was will have to look at a map.

Responsible four-wheelers probably get as tired of hearing this as respectable truckers probably tire of being lumped together with their dirty, smelly, loud-mouthed, super-trucker brethren.

Maybe, as a four-wheeler, I need to live down to the image by which I am obviously being perceived by truckers. Ya' think?

I'm so inspired by these generalized, all-encompassing statements. A couple of four-wheelers piss the guy off while probably hundreds drive by using solid judgement... and all of a sudden we're all a disrespectful lot.

Yeah... let's spread the love. It's all good.

It's the other way around, a couple of 4-wheelers that follow the rules, the major just think they have to be first. I see this any time there is a lane closure. Doesn't matter what state or highway, it's always the same.

As per the story, I do not give 4-wheelers a break in construction either.

When I drive in my car, I always give big trucks more room as I realize they take longer to stop, etc. Being on the road with Mike this past two months or so, it amazes me how many cars just completely ignore trucks!! I can't believe how ignorant so many of them are, especially merging onto the highways. They putter along, do NOT look to see who's coming and just meander on into your lane, often forcing you to hit the brakes HARD!! That's just stupid!! Doesn't anyone teach these morons how to drive?!?!??!?!

And you put on your signal that you're changing lanes and no way will they let you in, they just keep on coming zooming along, passing you on the inside lane.

And if there's a lane closure, yup, I see that CONSTANTLY!!! They CANNOT be behind a truck!! Heaven forbid!! They MUST race and squeeze in at the very end of the merge lane (MANY MANY of them) so they're in front of the big truck. They can't merge earlier when they SHOULD, they have to RACE to the very end and force you to let them in.

It's unbelievable how many cars argue with big trucks. I think they're nuts, myself. I never ever did that long before my hubby started driving truck because I know it takes them longer to stop, they're working, not out driving "for fun" (like oftentimes we are in a car), they KNOW how to drive (unlike a lot of idiots in cars) and they'll almost always give you a wave or a honk of thanks if you let them in. People are just in too much of a rush these days. Slow down and relax - enjoy life - NOTHING is worth getting into an accident for.

I have noticed in alot of the construction areas and traffic backups, that the big trucks are just as bad as the 4 wheelers. I don't mean the ones trying to move them over. I am talking about the 18's that will pull out and do the same as cars. It is about ME driving anymore.

Hmmm... sounds like the pot calling the kettle black.

Two wrongs don't make a right. At least in my book. For me? I will continue to extend courtesy to both truckers and fellow four-wheelers. Sometimes those that don't deserve it need it the most.
