NOEL, Mo. — Truckers traveling south on Missouri Highway 59 through Noel can find themselves between a rock and a hard place.
“Trucks hit the bluffs quite often,” Mayor Paul Gardner said this week. “It’s happening more and more.”
A sign one mile outside Noel on Highway 59 South warns motorists of an 11-foot, 1-inch ceiling of natural limestone. According to a Joplin trucking company, most tractor-trailers need a 13-foot, 6-inch clearance.
Considered one of Missouri’s most scenic drives, a three- to four-mile stretch of Highway 59 sandwiched between Elk River and the bluffs has been resurfaced many times in the past 60 years, Gardner said. He believes the road depth may have increased 10 or 12 inches over time.
State Rep. Marilyn Ruestman, R-Joplin, a Noel High School graduate whose father was Noel’s mayor in the mid-1950s, said trucks are taller than they were 40 years ago.
