Florida thieves use modified trailers to steal diesel

Florida thieves use modified trailers to steal diesel
Oct. 2007
Quote:
Thieves in Florida have been using modified trailers attached to pickup trucks to steal hundreds of dollars worth of diesel fuel from local filling stations.
According to the Orlando Sentinel, two men were arrested Thursday after deputy sheriffs caught them allegedly trying to siphon more than 500 gallons of diesel from tanks at a Mobil station in Orlando.
The pair parked their trailer, which had a hole cut in the bottom and three fuel tanks inside, over the openings to the station’s underground fuel tanks and began siphoning using a battery-powered siphon.
The pair was caught when a leak detector at the station set off an alarm as the fuel in the tanks got low.
Another thief was caught using a similar technique in Lakeland and Dade City, FL, earlier in the week.
Using a similar trailer set up, 70-year-old Hobert Gibson is charged with stealing more than 1,000 gallons of fuel from two different stations. One of the stations had reported missing about 11,000 gallons of fuel since January.
