| City, trucking industry reach compromise on route City, trucking industry reach compromise on route 10/23/07 Enid News & Eagle, OK Quote:
We’re glad to see city officials talk with trucking industry representatives about a controversial truck route through Enid.
The new route has generated a lot of conversation and concerns. City officials and trucking industry representatives are to be commended for sitting down together and discussing the issue.
That talk has resulted in a compromise over the route and penalties for violating it.
Enid City Commission amended the truck route ordinance at its meeting last week. Originally, violations were considered Class B crimes, with a fine of $544. Violations now have been reclassified as Class C. The first violation will result in a $144 fine, and subsequent offenses will be $244.
In addition, other streets have been added to the route. The truck route originally ran along state highways but has been amended to include Southgate east from U.S. 81 to Oklahoma 64 and Willow from U.S. 81 to Oklahoma 64 bypass.
City workers also have been removing obstacles to trucks turning onto streets along the route.
Public Services Director Jim McClain said triangular meridians are being removed at 4th and Willow. After that project, crews will cut the meridian back about 12 feet at Willow and Grand so trucks will be able to make the turn easier.
The median at Garriott and Van Buren also has been removed, which will make that turn easier for large trucks to make.
It’s a good thing when government listens to concerns and is willing to compromise and make changes that benefit all involved. We just wish this dialogue had taken place before the truck route was instituted. Solving a problem that exists is a good thing, but avoiding the problem altogether is even better.
