Truckers traveling though Arizona along Interstate 17 north of Phoenix may want to come up with a new plan if they are used to stopping at the Sunset Point Rest Area.
The Arizona Department of Transportation announced this week that it plans to close the rest area at Exit 252, located 40 miles north of Phoenix near Black Canyon City, for major renovation and remodeling. It will be closed for at least a year starting on Monday, Nov. 5.
According to an ADOT press release, 3,100 vehicles and about 7,500 people use the rest area each day, which currently has 20 truck parking spaces and 45 spaces for passenger vehicles.
ADOT officials said that they expect the rest area improvements to cost about $5.2 million. Renovations will include reconstruction of the rest area’s parking lot to accommodate more traffic and will add 28 more truck parking spaces and 56 more passenger vehicle spaces.
