LAS CRUCES - Like many families this holiday season, James and Lois Rouse hit the road for Thanksgiving, leaving from Cartersville, Ga., and heading to Los Angeles.
Unlike most families, however, their baggage was a 52-foot truck full of French doors. The Rouses, who have been married 24 years, are long-haul team truckers, trading the wheel and keeping each other company while hauling loads of chicken, or carpet, or potato patties across the country. While James has been trucking on and off for 20 years, new driver Lois is a minority - the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that just 4.5 percent of the approximately 3 million truck drivers are women.
When they're not on the road, Statham, Ga., a suburb of Athens, is home. But this year, they gave thanks over a special turkey dinner at a TravelCenters of America location west of Las Cruces after setting out Thursday morning from Odessa, Texas.
Snuggled in a black hooded sweatshirt against the cold winds whipping outside their booth, Lois's ears and fingers glitter with hoops and rings.
She wears her hair long, with reading glasses propped on her head, a Bluetooth headset clipped to her ear and a gold necklace reading "Mom" decorating her neck. Her husband's style ......
