The Oregon State Police are increasing patrols though mountain passes this Thanksgiving week with a special emphasis on enforcing trucking chain law requirements.
According to the East Oregonian, OSP chain enforcement efforts received a $35,000 grant from the Oregon Department of Transportation’s Transportation Safety Division to provide 550 hours of overtime enforcement in 12 mountain passes.
Sgt. Alan Hageman of the OSP Patrol Services Division told media that the project’s goal is to emphasize to drivers the importance of having the appropriate chain equipment so they can be prepared for driving challenges in mountain areas.
OSP will inspect commercial motor vehicles to determine whether they are in compliance with requirements for carrying chains. Information regarding Oregon’s chain-up laws for commercial vehicles and other motorists may be found at on the Oregon DOT’s Web site.
On Wednesday, Nov. 23, OSP reported the Cascade passes are all open. An OSP spokesperson told “Land Line Now” on XM Channel 171 that many passes are clear, some have packed snow or icy patches, and all trucks are advised to carry chains.
