Letter/Don't set up roadblocks

Don't set up roadblocks

Congress is wrong about Mexican trucks. They are no more dangerous than U.S. trucks and they don't threaten U.S. jobs.

Allowing Mexican trucks to deliver cargo within the United States would boost efficiency and reduce costs to consumers.

Consider safety.

Hundreds of Mexican firms operate trucks throughout this country as a result of being grandfathered in when a moratorium was placed on Mexican trucks in the 1980s.

Based on U.S. Department of Transportation inspections, these trucks have a better safety record than U.S. trucks. Between 2003 and 2006, these trucks were taken out of service after U.S. safety inspections 21 percent of the time. That compares to 22 percent for U.S. trucks.

Mexican drivers were out of compliance with licensing requirements at a rate of 1.2percent vs. 7 percent for U.S. truckers.

This is not surprising. A Mexican trucking company is not going to risk its profits by sending incompetent drivers and shoddy vehicles on a long haul.

Of course, you shouldn't have to rely on the judgment of Mexican business owners when you head out on the highway. And you don't. A pilot plan to begin opening U.S. roads to more Mexican trucks requires those trucks to meet the same safety requirements as U.S. trucks and to carry electronic tracking devices to make sure they stay on course. They cannot carry hazardous materials, either.

If the Mexicans cannot haul hazmat, that tells me they are not yet trusted by the authorities making these rules. Story sounded great up untill that part LOL.
