Diesel's surge stings truckers

Think filling up the SUV for a Thanksgiving road trip is expensive these days? Consider the plight of Chuck Ahn. At $3.46 a gallon for diesel fuel, Ahn, a driver for Key City Transport Inc. of Dubuque, Iowa, spent about $1,000 on Tuesday filling the twin 150-gallon tanks on his rig at the Flying J truck stop off Interstate 255 in Alorton, Ill. — a daily routine on his 2,000-mile trek from California to the Chicago suburbs to deliver furniture.

here in belgium we pay about 1,25€ (that is about $1,85) for 1 liter, when i fill up my truck when it's empty it costs my boss about 1250€ ($1,857.56) this i have to do every 2 days, my truck consumes around 100 liter/100km when it's fully loaded, when i can drive empty (doesn't happen much) it is still around 50 liter/100km.reason for this here in belgium is the high taxes that are on it

But it's all relative as shipping costs etc... are set to some extent, and the prices rising so quickly it can be difficult to adjust the cost of shipping accordingly. There are the fuel surcharges that companies charge yes, but they usually aren't keeping up, and it's even more difficult for the O/O because they won't get a bulk discount like many of the large companies, and with so much fuel use, those few pennies help out.
