Senate HOS hearing is Dec. 12

Senate HOS hearing is Dec. 12

Quote:
A U.S. Senate subcommittee will hear testimony Dec. 12 on the soon-to-be-published Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration interim final rule on hours of service.

U.S. Sen. Frank Lautenberg, D-N.J., chairman of the surface transportation subcommittee, will hear testimony on the rule and related matters from the FMCSA, truck safety advocates and the trucking industry.

In July, a U.S. Court of Appeals ruling vacated key aspects of the 2005 hours rule, sending it back to the FMCSA for more work.

The American Trucking Associations has announced it will be represented at the hearing by Richard Reiser, Werner Enterprises executive vice president and general counsel. ATA supports keeping the rule’s 11- and 34-hour provisions and maintains trucking has had a better safety record since they were instituted.

When the court decision was announced this summer, Lautenberg supported changes to the current hours rule.

Why can't you guys have our Canadian rules? 13 hours driving, 15 hours on duty? Most people are perfectly capable of driving 13 hours a day and not being tired!! Heck, most people are awake 16 to 18 hours a day!!

I don't understand why they cut you guys back so far. It's silly, IMHO.

Are they going to try to make lawyers and doctors and accountants work shorter days, then? Heck, a ton of them work 20 hour days a lot of times!!!

(No, I'm not saying you should be allowed to drive 20 hours a day but, to me, 13/15 is reasonable, easy on the body, still allows you to get a good 9 hours of rest, etc., etc., etc)

The socialist in our country are trying to emulate their socialist brothers in Europe. They won't be happy until trucks can only drive 8 hrs a day monday thru friday, that way when they are on vacation on the weekend they won't be hampered in their travels by trucks.

Bad news Brickman. It is not just the socialist as you refer to. There are alot of the Republicans in many of the states that have complaint's about the big old trucks in their way.

A USA driver could drive 13 hours in their day if they drive and take their 10 hour break, actually a driver can average more than 13 hours in the day.

Example:

I come off of a 10 hour break # 12:00 am today, I do a pre-trip on line 4 (15 minutes) drive 11 hours (puts me # 11:15 am) I can do a post-trip on line 4 & then take a 10 hour break (puts me # 9:30 pm) and he can drive for another 11 hours. Total driving time for the day was 13.5.

It's strictly running not much stopping though.

I do like how you can break up 2 hours of your 10 hour break (that the USA could really use . I do like the Canadian laws and maybe we will do that??
