Truckers deal with slick roads and tough fines

Truckers deal with slick roads and tough fines

When there's snow in the high country, truckers know the score."What I've seen, if I don't hit some ice and snow pretty quickly, these chains won't hold up," said Jim Warren as he chained up his truck.

But truck drivers also know the price if they don't follow the chaining laws.

"I want to say about a $500 fine," said Skip Ammons. "But using chains is definitely worth it."

Putting on these chains is something of an art. But without practice it can take much longer.

"It's pretty rough out here for us Georgia boys," said one crew as they slipped on the ice trying to put chains on their truck.

This weekend, truckers passing through the mountains will get all the practice they need. Weather warnings and advisories are raised through Friday night.

"A lot of trucks all have their chains on and everything. They're all spinning towards the top of Eisenhower tunnel," said Tim Baker.

Angry

I honestly believe that the CDOT has controlling interest in the chain manufacturers in that area.

This is a repeat of last years tactics, force the truck drivers to run on wet pavement for 15 or more miles BEFORE they actually need the chains.

Then sit back and watch the fun as the 4 wheelers cause a cluster **** near the top....not running chains when they actually need them, but are not being required to put them on.

I've reached the point where I won't even go across in a storm. To much stupidity by the four wheelers and what I haul is just not important enough that it can't wait a few extra hours. Lucky I live here and can leave on a moment's notice of the chain law being lifted. I don't have to risk my life.

CDOT has always done such a piss poor job keeping both of the hills clean, and now another driver has gotten killed this past week. There are only two places on the entire mountain that can be considered safe to chain up or unchain. Or as these morons have posted on signs; "CHAIN DOWN AREA" Chain down? Seriously have you ever heard something so stupid? This is indicative of CDOT being completely out of touch with the transportation industry.
