| DOT lets truckers use Rts. 206, 27 DOT lets truckers use Rts. 206, 27
12/19/07 Quote:
That's basically the message from the state Department of Transportation in response to requests from the Princetons and Lawrence that the large rigs be forced to steer clear of Routes 206 and 27 unless making local deliveries.
"DOT met with the communities on Monday and informed them that we will deny that request," DOT spokeswoman Erin Phalon said yesterday.
DOT Commissioner Kris Kolluri and members of his staff delivered that message in a meeting with representatives of the three municipalities and state Assemblyman Reed Gusciora, D-Princeton Borough, at DOT headquarters in Ewing.
Officials and residents of those municipalities have clamored against state trucking regulations, which they contend give truckers excessively wide latitude to travel through the state on two-lane highways such as Routes 206 and 27.
Princeton Township Commit teeman Chad Goerner said the DOT's decision is disappointing, though not an outright defeat.
The criteria on which the DOT bases its decisions for making roads off-limits as through-routes for large trucks is "applied inconsistently" from one road to another and from one community to another, Goerner contends.
"We just don't feel that we're getting equal treatment," he said.
But he said it is encouraging that Kolluri committed to work with the municipalities on key trucking-related initiatives.
