Trucking Firm's Closure Not Seen as a Trend

Trucking Firm's Closure Not Seen as a Trend

Earlier this month, a Pennsylvania trucking company closed its two locations in West Virginia, citing an inability to turn a profit in the Mountain State.

Although the loss of Ward Trucking Corp.'s 40 jobs in Hurricane and Parkersburg will hurt the state economy, trucking industry officials don't believe it is a pattern.
"I haven't heard of any others closing," said Jan Vineyard, president of the West Virginia Motor Truck Association. "We've made a lot of important progress the last couple of years -- workers' comp, tax changes. West Virginia is moving in the right direction."
Despite the progress, running a trucking business still is not easy, Vineyard said. "It's extremely hard to be in this business," she said. "One of the toughest things in the trucking business to deal with is the cost of fuel. Most things we can forecast. But it's hard to plan for the price of fuel."
