FedEx may have pay $320 million in back taxes

FedEx may have pay $320 million in back taxes

Quote:
FedEx Corp. may have to pay nearly $320 million in federal back taxes and penalties for classifying its delivery drivers as private contractors instead of employees in 2002.
Bloomberg reported that the IRS is also auditing FedEx for three other recent years and could assess back taxes on those years as well.
FedEx was in the news in recent days when the state of Massachusetts fined the company $190,000 dollars for allegedly misclassifying employees as contractors.
The delivery drivers in question are owner-operators, but in every other respect are treated as employees, right down to the uniform they wear and which hand they use to hold their clipboards.

Fedex makes their drivers hold their clipboards in a certain hand? Uniforms are no big deal, but I wouldn't be able to handle the micromanagement, that must be involved, if they have to have their clipboards in hand A instead of hand B.That's just wrong. If they can micromanage the drivers that much, then why can't they do something as simple, as manage the company in a way, that they won't be disobeying the law?
How many bombs, do you think this IRS audit will buy to fund this freaking war?

Misclassification of workers is something we see on the board alot. There are people trying to hire drivers to work for 1099. This is exactly what FedEx has done.

Blatent disregard for what the law classifies an employee.

I hope that they are stuck with the major fines that need to be accessed for them trying to avoid proper handling of employees.

I wonder if this means I will be getting another check from them. I got one last summer (for around $500) for overpayment of insurance premiums, even though I haven't worked for them since May '03.
And Prisoner, you're right, some of the terminal management are real micromanaging a-holes. I miss the money and being home with my family, but I don't miss anything else about that place.
