Truckers and travelers accustomed to crossing the Columbia River at Biggs Junction will have to find an alternative route starting Wednesday.
Crews replacing the bridge deck will close the Biggs Rapids-Sam Hill Bridge carrying U.S. 97 between Oregon and Washington until Memorial Day, diverting thousands of cars and trucks and potentially hurting businesses at this small, eastern Oregon crossroads.
The two states are splitting evenly the $16 million tab to update the crumbling two-lane roadway in an ambitious project that won't be completed until 2009.
