| Long-Haul Truck Drivers Adapt To I-64 Shutdown Long-Haul Truck Drivers Adapt To I-64 Shutdown 1/2/08 KSDK, MO Quote: (KSDK) - The I-64 shutdown will mean detours for thousands of drivers, including those from out of state. Truck drivers will be forced to make new arrangements.
Richard Barnum, a truck driver, said I-64 has become a big part of his cross-country trips.
"I'd say about 20 percent. It's a major interstate that runs through a lot of states," Barnum said.
Truck drivers are in the business of knowing which roads are open and which ones are closed. Citizens Band, or CB radio, is the standard form of communication for many truck drivers. Many of them will use it to work their way around the shutdown.
Scott Shy, a truck driver instructor, sends up-to-the-minute alerts to his drivers. He uses a computer similar to a laptop, installed in the back of his truck.
"It's just an awesome tool," he said.
Other drivers must rely on their eyes and ears.
"I had to drive through there yesterday. I've seen the big signs all lit up," Jerry Diehl, a truck driver said.
Local news reports are the primary source of information for some drivers. While the system of communication may vary, drivers agree the I-64 shutdown could put a damper on their trips.
"It'll add a good hour to my ride," Diehl said.
But the inconvenience is relative.
"The locals will really have a nightmare. I think an over-the-road truck driver will be a lot better off because he can route himself around it," Shy said.
