State rules limiting the size and weight of trucks have been relaxed so that Florida's growers can harvest and ship crops susceptible to freeze damage, Agriculture Commissioner Charles H. Bronson announced this morning. "Many farmers are rushing to harvest their crops to prevent losses," Bronson said. "The temporary easing of some highway restrictions helps them to more quickly transport their crops to processing facilities, thereby avoiding financial disaster."
Bronson's alert followed Gov. Charlie Crist's declaration Monday of a state of emergency and issuance of an executive order that directs the Florida Department of Transportation to relax the weight and size restrictions for commercial vehicles transporting vulnerable crops to processing sites.
Crist's order, which was signed Dec. 31, remains in effect for 14 days unless he extends it.

Truckers hauling loads of freeze-sensitive farm products must carry with them the permit letter issued by the FDOT stating the rule waiver.
