Truckers Caught In Diesel-Fuel Pinch

When he started A.J. Cabral Trucking in Montville 38 years ago, diesel fuel was 12 cents a gallon.
Today, with the price at $3.55 a gallon — $10,000 a week — owner Tony Cabral is feeling the pain.
“Since I've been in business, it's the first time ever that my fuel costs outstrip my labor costs,” Cabral said Thursday.
A.J. Cabral trucks haul road sand to towns in Fairfield County and bring back recyclables.
“I couldn't care less if gasoline is twenty dollars a gallon,” Cabral added. “Most of our (private vehicle) travel is discretionary, but no one burns a gallon of diesel fuel unless they have to. That's what I find disturbing. These oil companies have a chokehold on the global economy because of the price of diesel.” Prices for crude oil briefly edged just over $100 a barrel Thursday, following a similar trend the day before. The price on the New York Mercantile Exchange ultimately retreated Thursday to $99.18 a barrel after rising to $100.09, a trading record.
