RULES OF THE ROAD
1/17/08
Central Penn Business Journal, PA
Quote:
New federal rules that would change the standards for truck-driver training would produce better drivers, said officials with trucking companies and driving schools. But the proposed rules aren’t perfect, and local industry leaders suggested some improvements.

On Dec. 26, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) posted its new rules and opened a three-month comment period.
The rules would require 44 hours of behind-the-wheel training for new truck drivers before they can complete their training and begin driving.
Officials at schools and trucking companies said most responsible organizations already have similar time and competency requirements that trucking students must complete before graduating into the world of commercial transportation. They welcomed the changes FMCSA is proposing because safe, competent drivers are most important to companies, motorists and others.
“We have to live with the results of our trainees. So we have a vested interest,” said Don Osterberg, vice president of safety and driver training for Wisconsin-based Schneider National Inc. The trucking firm has six driving academies in the U.S. and Canada, including one in Middlesex Township, Cumberland County.
