Truckers Say High Diesel Prices Are Driving Them Out Of Business

Maine Truckers Say High Diesel Prices Are Driving Them Out Of Business

NEWS CENTER) -- Maine truckers say they're hoping for more help from Augusta in their struggle against high diesel fuel prices. They say the government needs to find more ways to keep them in business.Truckers say Maine has the highest diesel fuel prices in the entire country, which has taken a huge chunk out of their profits.

The legislature is going to vote on a bill to increase the weight limit for logging trucks. But one of the organizers of trucker protest meetings says that's not enough.

Larry Sidelinger owns a small trucking company. He says the biggest help would be to temporarily drop the tax on diesel fuel, thus reducing costs for Maine trucks.

He says truckers will keep pressuring the legislature to make that happen.

"Every one of these trucks generates over $20,000 a year in taxes for our people in Augusta to spend, which they do a nice job of doing. I commend them on it. But it's time they understood that when you take twenty or thirty or forty or how many trucks it is, every time one of those shuts down, that's a $20,000 bill gone in tax revenue, let alone the commerce that it generates," said Sidelinger.

Speaker of the House Glenn Cummings says the diesel tax helps pay for building and repairing roads, and eliminating the tax would just shift the burden on everyone else. Cummings says he does support some other changes, such as suspending axle weight restrictions on certain trucks.
The legislature's transportation committee has approved a temporary increase on total truck weight limits. But that five percent weight increase applies only to logging trucks.

Sidelinger says the move won't put a lot of money in anyone's wallets, but it's a start.

Cool

I say....let them eat cake

This part of the US has frequently given the NON local company the short end of the stick when it comes to paying a decent rate for freight.

When the locals go out of business, and the others STILL refuse to come there. What do you think will happen then. Higher freight rates maybe???

Will their customer base dry up from lack of inventory?

Will they move?

Who cares.

Florida - California your turn is coming...keep laughing

more weight is not the answer. our roads are already being torn up by over weight trucks!!!!!!raise rates to match what the prices of food and other goods have already gone up!!!freight rates are still the same or even lower than 5 years ago!!! when are people going to wake up and realize what's going on!!!! EVERY THING ELSE EXCEPT FREIGHT RATES HAVE GONE UP!!!!!!!!WHAT'S SO HARD TO UNDERSTAND ABOUT THAT!!!!!?????? People,do your PAPER WORK!!! If you can't add or subtract , find someone who CAN!!!! The big trucking companies can haul cheap,SURE! BUT sooner or later , they will have to make a profit. Can't buy tires for your truck??? THE LOAD IS TOO CHEAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Can't put brake shoes on you truck???? THE LOAD IS TOOOO CHEAP!!!!!!!!! Can't aford to change your oil??? THE ---ing LOAD is toooo CHEAP!!!!!!! If you haul for nothing , you will GO OUT OF BUSINESS!!!!HIGH PRICE FUEL IS HERE TO STAY!!!!!!!!!

Fedextruck Maine is the House of Pain

In the 70's we used to make the yearly 1000mile trip there for $10 trailer tags.If you load at LP in Houlton on christmas eve be sure to have enough fuel and eats to get back to NYC(civilalation).Maine claims to be vacationland but they dont cater to outsiders and are backward thinkers.High fuel is the least of there problems.Suppose there busy enough fighting nature.Oshkosh by Gosh

Let them go out of business? sure I agree with you when you say most freight comming out of there is cheap freight.. But do you really think they will have to raise freight rates?

Heck no they will NOT raise freight rates...
THIS IS WHAT THEY WILL DO

They will push thier legislation for foreign truckers, claiming there is a shortage of truck drivers and they can't move thier freight... When we know the real reason is they need to raise the rates...

So, they will never raise it just look for people who will and that's foreign labor... Nobody on our side to help explain the real reason they will not pull there cheap freight..

Bottom line...
I would rather local AMERICANS pulling the cheap freight then pushing washington for foreign labor....

Their fuel prices are not any higher than Illinois. I filled up there on the way back from Newfoundland.

A mere 5% increase in weight capacity probably won't gain them enough to be worth messing with!!!! Certainly won't improve their fuel situation.

It's called competition, and it makes the cost of most goods and services cheaper over time. Competition in the industry is good for everyone, as it makes the economy more efficient as a whole and your dollars will go farther in the long run. When it comes to foreign labor, all I can say is you have no right to a job, and competition is not easy. If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen.
